5.0 out of 5 stars Hi, my name is Nick, and I'm a recording dummy.... April 24, 2010
Format:Paperback
....at least until I read Jeff Strong's book. I needed a book that would explain the basic elements of recording, mixing, and mastering. This book provided that, and then some, and at the same time managed to explain everything in a very clear and concise manner. Jeff takes the reader through all the stages of music creation, from choosing the type of recording studio (DAW vs a studio-in-th-box), micing techniques, MIDI basics, to the mixing and mastering phases, as well as how to get your music out to the masses (via internet streaming, CD production, etc). I bought this solely for the purpose of learning some basics in mixing and mastering...I was pretty ignorant when it came to things like panning, EQ, compression and signal processing. Not anymore. I actually know how to use EQ and Compression parameters now! Thanks, Jeff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best available book of home recording February 10, 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a remarkably thorough and comprehensive overview of the recording process for home recordists. It is loaded with useful, detailed, PRACTICAL information, such as compressor settings, equalization, microphone placement etc. It is also written in such a way that you can follow the whole process from beginning to end without having to fill in the blanks by yourself as is the case with some other books on home recording. It's not just for beginners, but also great for people with some knowledge and familiarity with music recording. Highly recommended as your first (maybe only) book on recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Home Recording for Musicians January 30, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book and Guerrilla Home Recording at the same time. I found myself bouncing back and forth between them, each adding to overall learning experience. If the reader is starting at zero level, this is an especially good choice. Not only do you get the basics, but also a good sense of how to make knowledgeable purchase decisions and good practical recording advice.
I recommend reading the whole book before spending the first dime on equipment and software. Other books may fill in the blanks if you are the kind (like me) that wants a little more technical depth, but this book does exactly what it needs to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Knowledgeable book For newbies April 24, 2009
Format:Paperback
I liked the book, lots of good basic information, no hype for one product or another. Also a good reference book. Its also written in a manner that non technical people can understand. It's well worth the money. It has a simple straightforward format. I would recomend to anyone who is just getting into the recording.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Dummies??? June 25, 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
There is a wealth of information in this book, but I'm not so sure it's for dummies. I have no background with sound equipment, but I don't consider myself stupid. Having gone through a few chapters, I think that I will benefit from it over a period of time. For now, at least, I'm not planning on buying any other books on this subject. I should point out that I'm only an amateur musician and mainly interested in making backups for small gigs as opposed to making a commercial cd. I have a lot to learn about sound and related equipment and this book has been helpful so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what it should be. October 22, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have been recording in my home, as a hobby, for a couple of years now. I had gathered a lot of knowledge but I knew there were gaps. This book is a quick read, written in easy language, that gives you a great "big picture" of home recording - all aspects, from beginning to end. There is plenty of detail for getting started and knowing which areas you want to explore more in depth. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is new to the field or who, like me, wants to cover some areas that are still nebulous. I will undoubtedly go back to this book as an easy reference, whenever I have a question. Depending how crazy in depth you want to go, this might be the only book you ever need on home recording.

The book offers a lot of detail with various methods for home recording that best suits your needs. It provides good detail of how to set up the recording room from all necessary equipments to layouts of the room for efficient usage (includes diagrams). If you already have some equipment, it's easy to read around the equipment that you don't need info on. I'm looking forward to it, can't wait for my first CD!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars This book will help. December 7, 2012
By jam
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this book to try to clear up some confusion I was having on my experiments with home recording. This book takes it slow and easy, step by step. I was able to get a thorough understanding of the basics. With the knowledge I gained from this book, I was actually able to go back to several songs we had recorded not knowing what we were doing, and remix them into decent recordings.
