Grade 4-8-Sometimes books that come out so quickly after an event seem cobbled together and done with speed, rather than quality, in mind. This book, however, manages to capture some of the exuberance of the great home-run reord chase of the 1998 baseball season. It includes all sorts of action-packed color pictures and provides a fast-moving account of the home-run battle between Sosa and McGwire. Alternating chapters focus on the contrasting backgrounds and personalities of the two stars. McGwire grew up in a prosperous Southern California home. Sosa grew up poor in the Dominican Republic. McGwire tends to be reserved and a very disciplined hitter, whereas Sosa seems rather carefree and has always been something of a hacker at the plate. The colorful layout, sprinkled with quotes and statistics, is sure to spark interest. With last season's home-run derby still fresh in the minds of many young fans, this book is sure to move off the shelves.
