Review

"I heard Kevin Myers communicate these principles over a decade ago, and they have stuck with me ever since. I am thrilled that he and John have partnered to make these practical and timeless truths available to a broader audience. Not only are you going to enjoy this book, I have a hunch that you will never forget it . . . and will recommend it to others."—Andy Stanley, senior pastor of North Point Ministries

"I've known John Maxwell for over twenty-five years. He's a bestselling author, a fantastic leader, and an even better friend. I haven't known Kevin Myers quite as long, but I've watched him become an outstanding leader and innovative, gifted communicator. With John's partnership, Kevin has finally put his most impactful teaching into written form so he can share it with the country. I don't know a single person who would not benefit from reading HOME RUN. I highly recommend it."—Bill Hybels, senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church and president of Board of Willow Creek Association

"When I met Kevin, we just clicked. So did our staffs. I knew about him because of the message he gave at Catalyst in 2001. I must have listened to that lesson more than a dozen times because it was so impactful. What he taught then, he shares now in HOME RUN. Read it. Discuss it in your small group. Put it into practice. It's a message that can change your life."—Perry Noble, founding and senior pastor of NewSpring Church

"Kevin Myers is special. At a time when my priorities needed some serious rearranging, he walked me through the Bible, and led me to a relationship with Jesus Christ. Since then I've heard him preach hundreds of messages and the book that you have in front of you right now represents Kevin at his best. Read it and discover how you can be at your best, as a dad, husband, mom, wife, business person, you name it...it's all in how you run life's bases, and for so long I was running the wrong way. Kevin Myers and John Maxwell teaming up to talk leadership is like Hank Aaron and Willie Mays talking about how to hit a fastball. You can't help but listen and soak it in. HOME RUN-it's a Grand Slam."—Ernie Johnson, Jr., sportscaster, TNT and TBS

Is life totally random or is there a design (anywhere?)? What is life all about any way? Why are we here? Does any of this really matter? How do we find our way when everything seems to be cratering all around?

Could there really be a pattern on how to do life that makes sense? Yes there is and "Home Run" lays out such a pattern!

What is success in life? And isn't success better when there is someone to share it with? And let's look in the mirror. Can we hold our head up high with self-respect? Is our success significant?

Success -> Someone -> Self-Respect -> Significance

Kevin Myers and John Maxwell reveal both a remarkable and simple pattern, using the analogy of baseball, to lay out what we should and could be doing with the only life we have...the one we are living today. Tomorrow is not promised to any of us.

If you are tired of living a random life; if you are tired of wondering where you are and what you should even do next; if you want to tap into a power and develop the tools necessary to live a life that will sparkle, inspire, impact and transform both yourself and the world then read, internalize and apply "the diamond life," i.e. the pattern laid out in "Home Run."

Home Plate - Connection. Everything begins and ends here; it is where you hit (connect with) the ball and cross back over to score. Here we learn how to "connect" our purpose with God's power.

First base - Character. Win within. What happens most of the time when a player comes up to bat? They fail to reach first base. All along the journey of life all of us, at one time or another, let character issues get in our way - anger, addictions, selfishness, procrastination, gossip, lust...we all get it...but how do we control it?

Being a Christian is supposed to be all about abundant life - a life overflowing with joy and peace, right?

So why is it so many Christians find themselves banging their heads off the wall wondering when things are going to turn around. Wondering when that life of abundance is going to kick in. Are they not sincere enough, dedicated enough?

Pastor Kevin Myers was both dedicated to God and sincere in his faith, but yet he found himself knee deep in self-doubt and frustrated faith after trying to plant a church in Georgia. He was ready throw in the towel. He was burned out and low on hope.
But according to Myers, during this time of trial, God was revealing to him a pattern of living that would turn his life and ministry around.

Home Run: Learn God's Game Plan For Life and Leadership, co-written by Kevin Myers and John C. Maxwell, shares that revelation in a way most Americans can relate to - through the game of baseball.

Does a trot around the bases seem a little simplistic for a life-changing epiphany? Not being a fan of the National Pastime, I was skeptical of the import of this metaphor. But a couple pages into Home Run and I was ordering peanuts and Cracker Jack....metaphorically, of course.

As Myers struggled to plant a viable church in the suburbs of Atlanta, he had the opportunity to be mentored by John Maxwell, the preeminent authority on Leadership, highly respected in both the secular and Christian spheres. Throughout Home Run, Maxwell offers his insights on Myers offerings, relating stories from his own experiences, which give credence to Myers' observations.

Myers offers his readers a realistic game plan for life involving running the bases.

As a member of Pastor Kevin Myers' church since 1993, I have heard this teaching woven into sermons, Catalyst Conference talks, and small group curriculum. PK has been practicing Home Run leadership for years, and it has been proven out in the lives of people who listen, process, and apply the principles. Businesses have been founded on the bases and families have run them together. This book gives you the principles and the application by which you can learn God's Game Plan and hit a home run in life.

I heard Kevin Myers speak about running the bases correctly in life. Sounds pretty basic but I was struck by how much this message stuck with me. This caused me to purchase this book. Well, I have had it for one day and I have read it from cover to cover. What I discovered is that this book is profound. The layers that Kevin Myers walks the reader through makes me feel like the message was crafted for my ears only. John Maxwell then coaches you… I could go on and on but I know that I will be recommending this book to all of my friends and family. Love it!

That's a pretty dramatic headline right? How can a book save a life? Well a book can't, but it's principles can.

I was exposed to Kevin Myers "Home Run Life" teaching over 13 years ago. At the time I was on the verge of walking away from a 10-year marriage and three young children. I was consumed by the desire to make more and have more and I was miserable and lost.

Kevin explained that to have a fulfilling life we must all cover four bases: Purpose (why am I here), Character (who am I when no one is looking), Community (How do I interact with and treat others) and Competence (how do I perform and use my talents). He further explained that while we all have to cover the same bases, we can either cover them in our order or in God's order.

Kevin helped me realize that the order matters and that there are two distinct "patterns". The world's pattern focuses on performance and runs from there to community and/or character, while God's pattern runs the bases in the order above (purpose, character, community, competence and back to purpose). Like the rules of baseball you start at Home plate and end at Home plate to score.

Kevin showed me that the world's pattern is divisive and is all about trade offs (performance or community), while God's pattern is additive with each base building on the last (character + community + competence, etc.). So I can have success and I can perform, but it must be in the context of character and community. If I achieve success this way, it is meaningful and lasting. After hearing this teaching I realized that I had been doing life backwards and it was costing me everything that really mattered.
