A demonstration that winning with class is the only way that counts,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Home Run Pete (Shaun Gayle's Sports Tales) (Paperback)
Pete is the star of his baseball team and he knows and flaunts it. The fans are also aware of this and his is the only name they cheer. He treats his teammates as if they are props in a play with one and only one star. However, one day, when the game is on the line, Pete strikes out. Suddenly, the crowd is angry with Pete and boos rather than cheer. However, his teammates pick things up and Pete's team manages to win the game. After the game is won, the entire team receives accolades from the crowd and Pete realizes that he is part of a team and it thrills him to hear the fans cheer for everyone on the team.
The text is in a simple rhyming form that is easy and fun to read. The illustrations are colorful, yet not overdone in detail, making it easier for the young reader to understand them. Finally, the message is one too often unlearned in the modern world of competitive youth sports, namely that winning with class is the way it should be done. |
