Editorial Reviews

Baseball all-star Cory Brand knows what it takes to win in the big leagues. But off the field, with memories of his past haunting him, his life is spiraling out of control. Hoping to save her client's career and reputation after a DUI and a team suspension, Cory's agent sends him back to the small town where he grew up. Forced to coach the local youth baseball team and spend eight weeks in the only recovery program in town, Cory can't wait to return to his old life as quickly as possible. As his young players help him experience the joy of the game, Cory discovers his need to find freedom from his past and hope for his future … and win back the love he left behind. With this unexpected second chance, Cory finds himself on a powerful journey of transformation and redemption.

Having been invited to watch this movie in it's first week at the local movie theater by the mom of one of the production crew, I was mostly accepting her invitation, to be a supportive friend & have some popcorn! A baseball movie doesn't sound very interesting! Even my teenage son declined to come, saying: "You lost me at 'Baseball'"

But I was taken into another world, starting with the FIRST scene: a painful flashback to a childhood trauma, then brought up to speed with the main character's life. At that point I was emotionally invested and completely engaged. Poignant soundtrack: I bought two songs for my itunes playlist. Deals head-on with some very tough subjects, and follows through on some realistic, genuine, and touching outcomes. "Life isn't perfect, but you need to step up to the plate and give it your best try." I want to get a copy of this movie and see it again!

I had no idea what to expect from this gift DVD movie and let me tell you, it was a complete shock. I am so pleased to say that while it was given to me because it was filmed in my hometown, it absolutely blew me away for so many reasons.

This is beautifully filmed, sensitive to the content and intent of the creators, and "it brings it home." The casting is superb and the choice of Scott Elrod is brilliant. His ability to "be" Cory Brand is nothing short of winning; winning you over, winning your approval, winning your desire to really gain all you can from this film.

The message of course is powerful, but the fact that this could have been perceived as "just a churchy, Christian" film, shows how well written, acted and presented this drama was. It is not overdone, it is believable and one feels they have "been there" and can relate. For me it was double the experience having been filmed in my hometown. One can believe this is their hometown experience, their "revisiting" the ghosts of their past, their "second chance at life" and during the credits the real people of Okmulgee, Oklahoma who played roles, are revealed as are their 'stories' in a unique play of "character baseball cards".

Hooray for "Hollywood" so to speak. This one "knocks it out of the park" (pun intended.) Author Joyce Godwin Grubbs.

HOME RUN is a well written powerful story about a baseball player named Cory Brand who had many challenges as a young boy growing up with a difficult father. He took those feelings of abandonment and disappointment into his adult life which led him to make choices which were not the best for him or his career.

Meeting the right people while coaching a little league baseball team in his home town helped him to learn to forgive, trust in God, and acknowledge his abuse of alcohol. He was able to then move on in his life which brought him love, acceptance, redemption, and hope.

It is a family movie but I am not sure young children will understand the major theme. I think watching it with older children, middle school and high school children could lead to a family discussion about the theme of the movie and the choices we make and consequences they have in our lives.

I feel it is a movie worth watching. It definitely has application to our lives today.

I enjoyed the movie and bought a license to show to our youth group. Invite the family and the community to hear and see what God can do when we surrender our struggles to Him.

I ordered this movie and watched it twice the first day. Great acting and it keeps you guessing as to what will happen. I love the truth of how generational problems in families carry on until someone decides to make a change. Great things don't happen if you hold back!!! Good movie

Like many boys, I grew up playing little league baseball. My father played baseball and coached my little league teams and he has been a very encouraging and supportive figure in my life. My dad recently shared a touching story with me and my brother as we returned home together on a three hour car ride from the funeral of my father's uncle, my grandfather's last surviving brother. My grandfather was an alcoholic. He spent most of his adult life away at the VFW in my dad's small town where he grew up drinking with his friends instead of playing catch with his son or attending his baseball games and cheering on my dad. My dad wanted nothing more than his dad's approval and sadly although my dad was an accomplished baseball player and made his little league all-star team, his father never once watched my dad play baseball. My heart ached when my dad told me this story, and the even sadder story is that my grandfather died when my father was 22 years old from an accidental fall down the steps related to his drinking.

With that context, I sat down to watch the movie "Home Run," which released on DVD on July 23rd. The movie is a story that everyone can relate to, especially in our culture which lifts up our sports heroes and celebrities as the example of having "made it" in life. The "American way" seems to have been somewhat shaped by ESPN's "Sports Center" version of "making it," which is that if you are a star athlete, then you are the cream of the crop in society. In fact, the central character of the film, all-star professional baseball player Cory Brand, played by Scott Elrod, mentions that he is going home "to watch ESPN, and more ESPN" one evening when invited to an outing by a fellow little league baseball coach to a local community fair, the "Wild West Chili Fest.
