5.0 out of 5 stars wonderfully informative and practical, May 23, 2000
By
I was captivated by this book from the beginning.First she explains the differences between learning disabilities and normal variations in learning styles. Then she deals with parental academic expections and realistic ones. She also dispells the myth that homeschooling is the magical cure for learning disabilities, rather the opportunity to tailor a program to best suit the individual. This book is packed full of resources to help with a specific need or area .She combines her child develpment and special education knowledge with the honesty and humility of a mother who homeschools three children, one who is autistic. I would reccomend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and Uplifting, June 30, 2006
By
This book would be very helpful to any homeschooling parent with a "high needs" child, whether or not the child has a disability label. Sharon Hensley does an amazing job of including both very practical information along with inspiring and uplifting viewpoints. The book is compact, and easy to read, yet not simplistic. Before I started to home school my children, I was a special education teacher for many years, and have a Master's Degree in special education. Even though I've done a lot of reading and research, I still found this book to be very useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best out there, January 30, 2009
Among the best books on homeschooling I have read.

If you are not Christian, the intro and some of the short first section might bug you, but she doesn't stuff Christianity down your throat like so many "Christian Perspective" books are apt to do, just relates some of the authors personal perspective, as a Christian coming to terms with her child's disability. It is the only part of the book that really discusses religion, and it is pretty short.

It is well written, reasonable, uplifting and intelligent. It discusses a full range of learning differences and how to manage and evaluate the way to find the best learning path for your child. It helped me in the process of realistically setting goals for my son where he is instead of where I wish he could be. I sincerely wish I would have found this book a few years ago. This book is one of the few that will make it's way from a library rental to part of my permanent collection.

This book met me right where I am philosophically and gave me much comfort as I rear and home educate my 14 yr old with Tourette's and Asperger's. I love the author's honesty! There are times when we all want to speak our minds and I laughed out loud when Ms Hensley speaks of wanting to do just that when on an outing to the store. Amen, Sister! This is a terrific book with GOOD information and encouragement for those of us charting unknown territory educating our special kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars hands down the best special needs homeschool book, December 30, 2009
This review is from: Home Schooling Children with Special Needs (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
I have been homeschooling my special needs children for several years and have devoured every special needs home school book out there and this is the one I always come back to. This book helped me to understand what all those test results meant and how to use that information. There are chapters on expectations, acceptance and grief that would benefit any parent of a special needs child regardless of educational choice.

There are several special needs books out there that seem to primarily focus on ADD , which is fine but as a parent dealing with more severe disability I appreciated the authors viewpoint as a parent of a child with autism and developmental disabilities.

Thank you, Mrs. Hensley, for a practical, get-my-feet wet tool. It was written in a down-to-earth fashion, perfect for those of us who don't speak special educationese and yet find ourselves with our own special ed classroom. It offered useful tips, resources and guidelines for those of us who teach our own special people. An excellent place to start in the quest for help!

I had to pull my son out of school at the end of last school year due to a difficult and unhealthy environment. I was unprepared for the next step however, due to the speed in which I made the decision. This book has been a lifesaver. It has great recommendations that I plan to follow.
