5.0 out of 5 stars The new kings of heavy metal
Just because lead singer Lajon Witherspoon is black, don't dismiss him as a rapper with a heavy metal band at his arsenal, because that is definately NOT what Sevendust is. Sevendust is straight-up heavy metal. No but's about it. They are easily the heaviest band out there, and every person in the band has an awesome talent at their instrument. Guitarists John...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sevendust is back with a decent album
Sevendust is one of my favorite bands. they have an unbelievable vocalist, who which I believe has yet to release a super smash hit. The album is good but it could be better, songs like home and licking cream fail to deliver and it is very bland throughout the cd However songs like Denial, Grasp and Crumbled keep you very hypnotized with there great music and lyrics,...

5.0 out of 5 stars The new kings of heavy metal, August 18, 2000
This review is from: Home (Audio CD)
Just because lead singer Lajon Witherspoon is black, don't dismiss him as a rapper with a heavy metal band at his arsenal, because that is definately NOT what Sevendust is. Sevendust is straight-up heavy metal. No but's about it. They are easily the heaviest band out there, and every person in the band has an awesome talent at their instrument. Guitarists John Connoly and Clint Lowery are 1-2 punch guitarists, almost as good as James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett. Bassist Vince Hornsby holds his own punping awesome bass lines, and Morgan Rose punds the skins like no one else. Everyone in the band has a singing part also. But the band's secret weapon is singer Lajon. His voice is so great that it's haunting. He can both sing and scream with the best of them. A run-down of all the tracks on a scale on 1 to 5.... 1. Home-Nice opener, heavy intro, cool vocals by Rose (4/5) 2. Denial-The 1st single, bone crunching riffs and great screaming by Lajon (5/5) 3. Headtrip-Very cool song, love the chorus, also love when Lajon screams "NEVER FORGET THE PAIN! " (4.5/5) 4. Insecure-Sort of a prelude to Reconnect, not great, another good song could be filled in here (2/5) 5. Reconnect-Excellent, very nice chorus, great songwriting on this track (4.5/5) 6. Waffle-The 2nd single, one of the heaviest tracks here, starts slow, gets ROCK HARD (4.5/5) 7. Rumble Fish-Another LOUD track, most of it is screaming, but it's awesome (4.5/5) 8. Licking Cream-The highlight of the album, ITS AWESOME! Skin from Skunk Anansie guest stars on this track, and her voice combined with Lajon's is beautiful (5/5) 9. Grasp-More melodic, I don't care for it (2/5) 10. Crumbled-The heaviest track on "Home", very cool chorus where Connoly sings also (his voice is really cool) (4.5/5) 11. Grasshopper-A track where bassist Hornsby messes around and sings some stupid acoustic song. Entertaining though (3.5/5) 12. Bender-Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno guests on this track, and his voice only contributes. Its a very haunting track (4/5) Overall, if you like Staind, Machine Head, Metallica, or any metal band, you should DEFINATELY check this out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Darn Good, March 20, 2000
This review is from: Home (Audio CD)
I remember when I bought the first Sevendust album, and I quickly returned it. It wasn't that bad but it just wasn't all that good either. Well luckily the same can not be said for HOME. This cd is awesome, and I would recomend it to anybody who likes good rock music. Although I bought this cd in 1999, I am only now writing this review because i have encountered so many people who had not heard it and should hear it. My advice is that if you have 15 bucks buy this cd, and if you don't sell a kidney and get it. This was probaby one of the best heavy albums of the year, and the least appreciated

5.0 out of 5 stars ... so wrong ..., October 30, 2005

It's sad so few people see this album as the gem it is... In my opinion, tied with Animosity as Sevendust's best... why? First off, the guitar work by Clint and John is flat-out amazing. There is so much melody and harmonizing to be found, but it seems most can't look past the shear aggression to find it! Morgan's drumming? I think he really shined on this album... the complexity and precision is shocking. Then of course, there's Lajon's deep, passionate singing... angry? you bet! But still done with talent, not mindless screaming.

I just can't believe the reviews this album seems to get! I bought this CD on release day... and still listen to it! How many years is that? There's just something here, hidden... It's like the entire band had E.S.P. when making this one... They're so tight and together, each song is like an extension of the last.. I'll admit, I really don't like the first song "Home" at all... but every other song? I know like the back of my hand! I'm not saying to buy this album for 17 bucks... haha.. I'm not saying to even buy the album at all.. Just give some of the songs a chance... they'll definitely grow on you. You might be surprised... there's something really good here..

5.0 out of 5 stars A great second masterpiece!, October 5, 2005

This is one of my favorite Sevendust albums. I think of this album as a great step up from the first without selling out. It is like their first album, only with more thought into it. The songs are so much more catchier. I'm not just talking about the singles that came off of this album. I'm talking about the whole thing. Each song has it's own "hook" that draws you into each song.

It still has that heavy edge to it that made them so popular from their first album. So many people today are calling albums "mature" even though they really aren't. In my opinion, this is totally a more mature album than the previous, only this time it really is. It also leads the way for the next album 'Animosity' which lost a portion of the raw edge these first two albums give us.

This album gets five stars, and if it were possible I would give it six! This is a great album from beginning to end. Oh, and speaking of end, Chino from Deftones sings on the last song which is amazing! This is totally worth the money on getting. You can't just go by the 30 sec clips this site gives you either. Each song has too much to offer. Get this album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Whoo ha, January 28, 2005
This review is from: Home (Audio CD)
"Home" is not as diverse or as mature as Sevendust's subsequent releases, but it's still a pretty solid slice of hard-groovin' hard rock. Just about every song is crunchy and full of groove power, mixed up with the occasional mellow bits here and there ("Waffle" and "Grasp"). Morgan Rose is a mighty drummer (studied under Terry Bozzio, and experiments with trigger samples like Dave Weckl; how many numetal drummers can say that?), and Lajon is probably a better singer than you.

This is great stuff. Buy it if you want some thick heavy groove.

To be honest-Sevendust's debut didn't impress me.My whole view of the band changed once "Denial" hit the airwaves and I bought "Home".I dare you to find me a better so called "new metal" album.

1. Home 10/10 the choppy riffs are just the start of great things to come
2. Denial 20/10 the best sevendust song ever, i can listen to this all day and night and never get tired it's just amazing
3. Headtrip 15/10 the second best Sevendust song ever very aggressive and brilliantly crafted
4. Insecure 10/10 even this little 1 minute guitar lead in is amazing
5. Reconnect 9/10 i usually skip reconnect to get to the next couple of tracks but still a great song
6. Waffle 10/10 good, old fashioned sevendust here folks-the second single off the album which didn't see as much airplay as Denial
7. Rumble Fish 10/10 Sevendust really release some aggression here and throw in some of the best chopped up guitar patterns ever
8. Licking Cream 12/10 the third best Sevendust song ever I can't get tired of this one-the whole Lajon and Skin (Skunk Anansie) combo is amazing-definitely worth your time
9. Grasp 9/10 good song, but overlooked
10. Crumbled 10/10 awesome track i love how the bass really stand out
11. Feel So 9/10 good effort but usually i'll pass
12. Grasshopper 10/10 haha I like the little 8 second cowboy thing
13. Bender 10/10 amazing combo of Chino (Deftones) and Lajon rock out the end of the album-a definite stand out track

I praise Sevendust for their work on this album.Definitely in my Top 5 albums of all time.Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Explosive tracks make up for weaker ones; AWESOME ALBUM!, April 18, 2002
By

I actually won this CD from my friend's music 'zine fundraiser draw. (The booklet is signed by the band members.) I had heard of them a bit prior to winning this album, I liked what I had heard on the radio so far (I vaguely remembered Waffle at the time) and I bought a ticket for this album for the hell of supporting my friend's fundraiser.

Goddamn, am I GLAD I won it! I'm now a lip-synching bedroom-thrashing Sevendust fanatic, all thanks to this album. Soon after Animosity came out, I bought that, and then their self-titled release awhile later.

I really don't understand why this album "failed to be a commercial success", but I don't care... I love it. It's different metal than anything else out there, and in my opinion, that makes it all the better. This album is wonderfully hard and melodic at once; lajon's voice is awesome, morgan's drumming is so unique and complicated and smooth all at once (listen to them during "I'm home, leave it to me/Leave it to me now that you've seen" - amazing); clint and john's guitars will take turns, complementing each other, then intermingle perfectly; vince's pulsing bass adds dark dimension.

There are however a few weaker tracks that I skip, namely, Feel So and Grasp. And Grasshopper's not even a song (??). I can listen to it without skipping until Licking Cream ends (WICKED track, by the way, like everyone's said already), and then I skip over to Bender (also an awesome song).

I really like Home, it's a good intro track - took a bit to grow on me, but now I can't live without hearing it first thing after I pop it in my stereo. Shows off their different sound.

Denial is good but it doesn't seem to fit right after Home with its fade-in start... other than that, I really like it also.

It gets better at Headtrip... love those first few lines: "Forever after/You killed my laughter/All I've done/Doesn't matter/SELF!".

A lot of people have been whining about Insecure, but to me it's a great melodic intro to Reconnect, my favorite track on the album. I just wish they didn't make it a seperate song, it seems to be a filler track that way.

Anyways, Reconnect - what can I say? I love everything about this song, the lyrics, Lajon's voice, especially the music - the main attraction. I think it's got a funk style to it, especially at the bridge.

Waffle's good, with an explosive chorus and bridge that are rock-out-worthy.

Rumble Fish is okay, a bit long for its own good and kind of repetitive, but the bridge ("Get up/get up/get up/get up/get up") makes it worthwhile... just the way Lajon whispers it to the music is perfectly infectuous.

Licking Cream is definitely a masterpiece. You need to hear it for yourself in order to appreciate the sheer metal magnitude of this song... and all the while, it's completely harmonious.

Don't really like Grasp all that much, or Feel So... i'll think i'll skip Grasshopper. Crumbled is listenable.

Bender is a great song, other than Chino's voice I can pick out other Deftones musical influences. Sounds like a definite Sevendust-Deftones hybrid, and it's not bad.

All in all, the many kickass songs on this album make for an AWESOME release. I still don't know why the media would thumbs-down Home but i guess they'll slander anything that's not totally generic. I know I enjoyed the most part of it. If you're into alternative metal and the like, you CAN'T miss this!

It is often said that the more people anticipate your sophomore effort, the harder it will fall from the pedestal. If that kind of disappointment was the case than there would not be as welcome of a homecoming for Sevendust in the loud rock community. Following up their groundshaking self titled TVT debut with Home, the southern quintet seeks to redefine the way it is perceived inside the loud rock landscape, shining forth with powerful grooves, commanding vocals and a metal stance not likely to be driven from its present home. Driving groove laden riffs are continuously trudged upon by the layered vocal counterpoint by lead Lajon Witherspoon with axe-slinger Clint Lowery and drummer Morgan Rose. Witherspoon's explicit use of the death metal growl along side of his very soulful harmonies makes for a very dynamic approach, thus adding to the already diverse vocal landscape. Opting this time around for a little less in the way of expressionary diversity in syncopated rhythms and shifting moods and focusing more on catchy, sing along choruses and consistently flowing guitar riffs. That is not to say that the off-kilter bottom end and backwards groove rhythms aren't prevalent throughout Home, but it is obvious that the Sevendust crew had other avenues they wanted to tred down more. The road that Sevendust travels home this time around also includes two very memorable guest appearances. Skin (Skunk Anansie) lends her unique pipes and writing approach to "Licking Cream" while Chino (Deftoens) brings his gritty emo inspired voice and writing approach to "Bender." With production credits going to Toby Wright and Jay Jay French there is never a lack of power throughout Home. If you already know what the Sevendust experience is all about, than welcome home to a sophomore effort that won't fail your ears or your moshing feet, and if not that this is one homecoming you really should not miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Truely Awesome Metal CD, September 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Home (Audio CD)
I love this record! I believe that Sevendust is one of the most inventive and talented new metal bands that are arising now. Their first album was good, but the songs lacked good hooks or tunes, making the songs (with the exception of songs like Black and Terminator) almost indistinguishable from each other. This album however has a much more creative flow to it. Lajon takes more advantage of his vocal talent to put a beautiful melody over the bludgeon of John and Clint's guitars. Plus, drummer Morgan Rose has improved a lot, using different beats and making good use of the double kick. Furthermore, bassist Vince Hornsby has kicked up his sound a little bit (you can actually hear what he's doing now) and it really adds dimension to the songs. And finally, the duet with Skunk Anansie's Skin is a really cool departure on Licking Cream, and the duet with Chino Moreno on Bender simply kicks a**. I love this band, and anyone who gave this recording a bad review can shove it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sevendust: "Home", February 13, 2009
This review is from: Home (Audio CD)
With "Black" and "Bitch" (of debut album Sevendust) becoming big fan favorites around their hometown, there was enough of a fanbase to warrant significant progression for a heavier second sitting, but one that didn't stray too far from what a band started from. In "Home", Atlanta's Sevendust beats out the Sophomore slump with a hard-hitting album worthy of following up to their eponymous 1997 debut for TVT.

Sevendust began to gain large popularity following release of this album in 1999, and it's not hard to see why it sits well with most alternative stations. It hits hard, very hard, but manages to keep a groove, a beat to it that keeps it enjoyable and not from becoming too busy or aggressive. Additionally, Lajohn Witherspoon is as professional a singer as he is a shouter, screamer, or rapper. Morgan Rose's drumming is crisp and sharp, possibly one of the most impressive drummers I have ever heard, and the dual guitar work of Clint Lowery and John Connely along with the backing bassline from Vince Hornsby create tones that would beautifully compliment any musical style, ranging from Metal to Rap or even Funk. Overall, the vast majority of the songs on here are very strong and well written. Not all are perfect ("Headtrip" seems to be the weakest of the set, if we're not counting the filler, less-then-10-second "Grasshopper"). However, the majority of what can be heard on here has been well crafted and performed. Musically, it can be enjoyed by fans of Metal, Alternative rock and even Hip-hop.

The album has a tendency of being one of the most heavily sourced albums at any Sevendust concert, With Sevendust playing any of their big hits from the album, including "Denial", "Waffle", "Rumble Fish", "Bender", "Licking Cream", and "Home". Many are still played on Atlanta radio stations.

Ideally, if you were looking for a hard hitting rock group from Atlanta GA, this would be a fine band pick. Sevendust has SEVEN albums however, so if you're new to the band, I would recommend TVT's greatest hits which covers the years 1997-2004 (Which are arguably the bands best years). Should you feel that further investigation into the band is necessary, I feel you will enjoy your money's worth for this record!

Breakdown: A Heavy hitting Atlanta Metal band shows a notable improvement from their debut, producing a raw edge to finely crafted songs. While the album is not perfect, it is a fine addition to any hard rock or metal fan's collection.

Sevendust: "Home" (B+)
