Looks nice and well constructed.

I feel like this was a huge waste of money, and now I am stuck with it, as it would be a huge hassle to take apart, package, and ship back.
Kimberly L Borsellino
The color is much darker, almost more like cherry than oak.

I purchased this item because it was affordable and had sturdy solid construction to the wood. There is no particle or composite board used in this item. The color is a darker oak finish, darker than what photo looks like, so it didn't match my woodwork of the house as much as I liked, but it was the closest I could find. They classify it at "warm oak" on the box. Bench and hooks solid, but spring hinges needed to be siliconed before I installed them, very stiff to open or close. Overall though, very worth the purchase.

Update August 2nd, 2011: I stil really like this piece. I made a small modification to my unit by adding mirror above the hooks. I had it custom cut at a glass place locally to fit the area copletely, and secured it with double sided foam tape. It added the illusion of lightening it up a bit, and gives me a mirror in my entry way for people to check their hair when they come in out of the rain and wind, and also a bit more light reflecting off of it. Now it looks like some other units that are much more expensive, and the modification only cost me about 10 bucks. Looks as if it came with the original unit. Again, this unit is a very nice hall tree stand.

It came in the time stated. Item was easy to put together, only took about 1.5 hours. Do step 8 before step 7, will make assembly easier. The color is much darker, almost more like cherry than oak. Have oak in dining room, this is not oak. Otherwise a good product, would have been five stars but color is off. Would recommend to friends, would purchase again.

Not sure I'd buy it again after all the hassles. The biggest problem was with the lid to the bench. It is held in place by three prefitted Tee Nuts. These are nuts for a screw bolt that are held into the wood by four sharp prongs -- it's like a nail but it's a nut. So when I tightened the screws down, all three tee nuts popped right out. Fortunately I was able to go buy some 2 inch bolts, nuts, washers, and lock washer (2 washers and 1 nut washer for each bolt and nut) and get the lid on there. So yeah there are some metal bits sticking out the back side. At least it's functional, but I'm pretty pissed off about it.

The cams and camlocks are a huge pain to work with. I've done assembly furniture before where the cams can only screw down so far, so that they are all even. Not so here. You are going to want to measure the cams clearance from the wood pieces to be sure they're all nice and even. For the most part, 1 inch or 7/8" worked best. In some cases though, I had to go closer to 3/4" to get a tight lock. Pain in the ass. Fit a piece, twist the cam lock, find it too loose, undo it, screw the cam down a bit more, try again, etc. You have to go into this with the right expectations, or you'll have a stroke.

Another complaint -- many of the wood pieces on the finished sides have these tiny pinholes in strange clusters. You won't notice them from a distance, but not the sort of thing I'd expect from a $300 piece of furniture.

I didn't even bother with the springs for the bench lid -- this is shoddy hardware that will only cause you trouble. Just don't slam the lid. I grew up with a real one of these benches; it had no springs. We were just careful.

Assembly was hindered by excess stain and varnish in the stretcher channels that panels slide into. It was neccessary to chisel and sand channels in order to accept panels. After the bench seat was installed and springs attached per instructions, upon closing the lid, the bench seat pulled loose from the back. The pressure of closing the lid caused the bolts to pull the threaded inserts out of the back rail. I called the supplier "WSports" after recieving an email requesting feedback. The answer was that they would have to contact the manufacturer in China to see what could be done. Poor customer service. I will repair this unit to the best of my ability and at added cost to me. I will not purchase product that requires assembly from Amazon again. My advice is find another Hall Tree to buy.

First off they should not say "assembly required". Description should say "Build your own hall tree with this kit" because you essentially build the piece from the 133 (including hardware) separate items included. It took me 4 hours from unpacking to completion and I have a lot of experience working is fabrication shops of different types. It's made of solid woods and look nice when finished. I thought the engineering was better than most put-together-yourself furniture but in the end it's still not the kind of quality you get with factory made joints. I suspect a full on factory built piece of this size would cost $800+ so it's a tradeoff. In conclusion, this is a nice piece for the investment but if you're not handy with tools you're in for nightmarish experience!

Looks nice and well constructed. Color is definitely more cherry than the warm oak that is listed. Would recommend putting washers on head cap bolts when constructing to prevent over-tightening and damaging wood. The holes for spring screws were not properly spaced but easily remedied if you check that before installing.
