A RITA finalist for romantic suspense, she is the recipient of the Award of Excellence for contemporary romance, a RIO (Reviewers International) Award honoring excellence in women's fiction, a Reviewers Choice Award from Romantic Times magazine, and a two-time recipient of the Golden Leaf Award for contemporary romance. A native of Hightstown, New Jersey, she lives amidst the rolling hills of Chester County, PA, with her husband, one geriatric gold retriever and one rambunctious mixed breed rescue dog. She's currently neglecting her garden and working on her next book. In past lives, she's been a teacher and an insurance executive, but firmly believes she's found the perfect job: sitting in her sunny office in old sweats and J. Crew flip flops, making up stories and the characters who live in them, and getting paid for it. Could life be sweeter?

HOME FOR THE SUMMER is the 5th book in The Chesapeake Diaries collection. I have every book by Mariah Stewart and she's one of my favorite authors. She never disappoints her loyal readers, and always writes a wonderful story with likable characters.

The four books prior to "Home for the Summer", in order are; Coming Home (The Chesapeake Diaries) Home Again (The Chesapeake Diaries) Almost Home (Chesapeake Diaries, Book 3) and Hometown Girl: The Chesapeake Diaries. The usual cast are back including, Dallas and Grant, Steffie and Wade.

Lucy Sinclair and Clay Madison grew up in St. Dennis and they were best friends. Lucy always enjoyed the summer there, at the beach, sailing and swimming. But twenty years ago, something happened, and she's carried a secret with her ever since. She also left St. Dennis to attend college and purposely stayed away.

Clay on the other hand, remained in the small town and worked on the family farm. After inheriting the farm, he began an organic brewery and things were looking up. But, he never married and always had a place in his heart for Lucy.

Lucy returns home this summer to help out at the family inn in preparation for a big celebrity wedding. Lucy and Clay reunite and sparks fly. It's as if after twenty years nothing has changed between them.

Too bad Mariah Stewart spent so much time thinking and writing about Lucy and Clay's business details, and not enough time was spent on building and developing their relationship. When I read a romance I want the couple to be in the same place together for more than one week. Lucy constantly having to go back to LA just got old. I also don't want to know every detail of how they run their business. If you want to write a book on how to run a business, then write one, don't make a romance novel out of it. If you want to write a romance then at the very least have the couple in the same town together falling in love.

Having said all that, I have to say that I read the first 4 books of this series and absolutely loved them. I love the town and the people of St. Dennis. I do plan on reading the next in the series; I just hope Ms. Stewart gets back to what she does best, writing about romance.

I'm just about ready to give up on this series. There is entirely too much frivolous filler and not enough solid believable storyline in regards to the main characters. It took four books before we finally got Lucy and Clay's story -- and what a disappointment it was. Talk about cheating the main characters out of center stage! They spent more time apart than together and when they were together, most of that time was shared space with others. There was no feeling of a relationship growing between Lucy and Clay. Both characters made appearances in previous books and had piqued my attention from the beginning. Both were likable, interesting people with great potential for a captivating read. The author hinted at all the possibilities but chose not to write it. Even the ending was rushed and unromantic. This one was a major disappointment.

Lucy is in town to help plan a huge wedding at her family's inn, but cannot wait to get back to the west coast and the rest of her successful party planning business out there. There are secrets that haunt her and no one know about them. She has buried her friendships here and wants to block them out, she is just plain scared when she is here. What Lucy does not expect is to land a second huge wedding, one that will last a week, and a secondary anniversary party for a long time client who makes this a condition of moving to a different week of the summer. Even less expected is to be reunited with Clay, her long time childhood friend, and realize that she has feelings for him even though she could never live here. But maybe just made she can face her past and finally find her future.

One of the best parts of Home For the Summer the unique jobs that both Lucy and Clay have. Lucy is this amazing party planner and it was so cool to read about her interactions with her clients and making their dreams come true, not matter how big or how small. Clay is starting an organic brewery and we get a peek into that business as well. Mariah Stewart is great at giving the reader just enough information to spark thoughts and then move on to a different part of the story.

This was a great story for those who are looking for a happily ever after with some bumps along the way. I like that things were not perfect in this story. The are really and very painful at times, but really when is life perfect. NEVER! I was never expecting the source of Lucy's angst about the inn but liked how it was finally dealt with.

When an author that you like does a series like the Chesapeake Diaries, it's a pretty sure bet (although not always) that you will enjoy the next book in line too, and Home for the Summer doesn't disappoint. I like Mariah Stewarts' style of writing, it's a smooth, easy read that takes us back to St. Dennis and gives us a closer look into the lives of two more of its residents, Lucy and Clay. I liked Clay's character especially because he's just a good, solid guy who knows who he is and what he wants and is willing to work for it and wait for it. And what he wants is Lucy whom he has known since childhood. Unfortunately, Lucy has a business in California and although she is fond of Clay, her memories of St. Dennis are not. He has a chance to convince her that both he and St. Dennis are worth a closer look when she comes back to town for business. It's a nice slow ride watching these two figure out how to be together in a way that suits them both and for Lucy this means coming to grips with the past. The mark of a good series is the author's ability to keep it fresh, while keeping us up to date with characters we already know by seamlessly weaving them back into each new addition that still keeps you wanting more. This is exactly what Mariah Stewart does with Home for the Summer! Carry on Mariah!
