Book Description

What could a gypsy and a Vietnam veteran have in common?
Silvertown's outcast, Poppy Tippen, has loved football hero Sam "The Force" Callahan forever. But he never seemed to know she was alive. Now he's home from the war and she suddenly finds herself comforting him from the demons of "that damn war." Is his attention merely an escape from the haunting nightmares? Or does she hold the interest of the only man she's ever truly loved?
Sam Callahan's only solace from the war nightmares wrecking his life comes in the unlikely form of a gypsy girl with stigmas of her own. He's known Poppy his entire life, but there's something different about her now. Something special he desperately wants to hold on to. Can he convince her she's the only thing he needs to put the past behind him?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Heart-Warming Read December 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Home. That place we go after a horrendous day at work. Home. That place we yearn for when life beats us down. Home. That place we feel most safe. But what is Home? A town? A house? A family? For Vietnam vet, Sam, home becomes the arms and the heart of Poppy, someone he's known since childhood.

I was eager to read this story set in the era I knew so well. I'd graduated from high school in '66 and the story is set in '67. I lost a brother-in-law in 'Nam in '67, so parts of the book literally took my breath away. Ms. Rhose's attention to detail of that era is spot on--attitudes, clothing styles, sayings, cars, shoes, social morals.

What's equally engrossing about this work is the tonal darkness the author has skillfully woven into the story. Initially, her choice of words and feelings for Sam are dark in nature. She sought to show us the darkness of a soul shot-to-hell and bled-out by jungle warfare in a far-off country. Slowly, as Poppy ministers to Sam with her boyant, accepting nature the tonality of the story lightens, as does Sam's spirit. By book's end, the words the author uses shine with the sunlight of Poppy's unconditional love and Sam's growing love for her. This is so seamlessly well-done, you aren't aware of the changes within your own spirit as you read "HOME," yet the smile on your face as you read the last page is testiment to Ms. Rhose's artistry with words.

Home is a story of acceptance, self-forgiveness and finding that person our soul seeks. Ms. Rhose delivers a memorable read. A keeper, in my opinion, especially for those whose lives have been touched by war--no matter the era. I look forward to her next project.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sam + Poppy = sweet surrender April 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
HOME is a touching story about a Vietnam vet returning home in 1967, and a local gypsy girl. As a well to-do local boy, Sam never paid any attention to Poppy...until he came home battle beaten, and dealing with post traumatic stress disorder. Something about the fun-loving Poppy draws him to her, and rather than stay locked up in his huge and mostly empty mansion with his depressed mother, he seeks the bright light that is Poppy, as he longs to put his demons away for good, and hopes for healing. Little did he know he'd have a new chance at life with the gypsy girl. Yes, the scrimshaw doll has a bit of a role in this story, but the true story is the sweet and touching romance.

The author has a lovely way of telling a story, and many endearing descriptions such as this one: Her legs feeling soft and gushy like chewed gum in sunshine - made reading this novella easy on the eyes yet big on emotion

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Healing June 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Vietnam era isn't a common time period for the romance genre, but HOME tackled a troubled and painful time in our history and delivered a sweet story of acceptance and healing. Comprehensive for such a quick read, Ms Rhose both entertained and plucked at the heart strings with Sam and Poppy's story of two wounded hearts finding home in each other. I finished HOME in one sitting and look forward to more stories from Ms Rhose.

More About the Author

Calisa Rhose writes in Oklahoma, USA where she lives with her hero of 28 years and her three grown daughters and five granddaughters. She loves her horse and has three spoiled dogs and one cat between her and hero husband.
It all began when she discovered daydraming about meeting the Bay City Rollers- that Scottish rock group who came like the second invasion from Europe in the mid 70's. (and Billy Ray thought he cornered the mullet market with Achy Breaky Heart!) She decided to write those daydreams down and has never stopped. Now those cute rockers are replaced with cowboys, firemen or whoever strikes her fancy.
She writes contemporary and vintage historical. She enjoys writing about cowboys more than anything but will throw a fireman in for fun.
