Great Read!,
This review is from: The Home Team: Hostile Borders (Avon) (Mass Market Paperback)
Chief Chalker has a hit with his second Home Team book. The action is fast paced and almost non-stop. The concept of Al Queda terrorists working with drug smugglers is all too real.
My only criticism is the detailed descriptions of the Team's load out for every excursion. It's interesting to hear once, but we don't need to know which socks he's wearing with which tactical holster. I have to complain about such minute details because that's all that's wrong with the book. If you like Andy McNabb, Marcinko, or Brad Thor, add Chief Chalker to your list of "must reads"

The Threat of Terror is real.,

While we watch 'The Minutemen' and debate their worth, illegals of all calibres are slipping into this country at an alarming rate. With Homeland Security unable or unwilling to stem this flow, 'Home Team-Hostile Borders' tells a frightening tale of what can easily be our next worst nightmare.

Page-turner,

This fast-paced novel is the second in Chalker and Dockery's "Home Team" series. I'd been looking forward to it, and got through it within two days of picking it up. Like its predecessor ("Undeclared War"), its plot is frighteningly plausible. One of the hallmarks of the series is the technical detail. When our heroes kit up, you'll learn the brand, make, model, and features of every piece of equipment; they stop short of giving you the serial numbers. Non-stop action, written by people who know what they're talking about. (I doubt if the authors are to blame for the unimaginative title.)

Fantastic action/adventure romp!,

The 2nd novel in the Home Team series was another great, fast-paced adventure read. Like the first novel, Undeclared War, authors Dennis Chalker and Kevin Dockery give us another hardcore action read that drives ever forward like a fully-armed locomotive.
With realistic details and an all-too-real terrorist plot, Hostile Borders entertains you till the climatic, action-filled end. Ted Reaper is a hero of today's headlines. I'm glad to have found such a fun and exciting new series. I can't wait for the next new novel coming out in February. Hollywood, look no further for your new action major motion picture!!

Yet another exciting read!,

This in some ways was better than the debut novel.
I will be very much looking forward to reading more from this series. Hollywood execs need to take a close look at making this into a series of movies. If you are a fan of action and adventure - then this one should be right up your alley.

Emerson, 5.11, Camelback, SOG, DSC sales piece?,
This review is from: The Home Team: Hostile Borders (Avon) (Mass Market Paperback)
The story is just fine. The author seems to know what he needs to. But his incessant, continuous, repetitive listing of equipment minutia is simply so distracting as to make the book unreadable.
It isn't too bad to describe the MANUFACTURER of a pair of pants that is being put on - or even to define the pants by STYLE and COLOR and MATERIAL of construction - ONCE. It's bad, but not a killer. What kills the story is that the author lists each and every detail of the clothing/loadout as it is taken OFF too. And then you get it all over again when he puts the same stuff back on in the morning (Make, Model, version, color, mode of wear etc.) If the hero wears the same knife (Emerson CQB-7 BTW) throughout the book why do we need to have the full nomenclature, weight, manner of manufacture and blade style - EVERY (darned) TIME it crosses someone's line of sight? It is almost like the author hoped to get some sort of marketing kickback for mentioning a product. The only thing missing is the product order-number from the sales catalog. If such was the case, he could retire on a penny for each mention of 5.11 Tactical pants! Perhaps the author feels that simple readers won't realize that " 5.11 tactical pants" would STILL be made by 5.11 from page X to page Y to page Z ad nauseum. I really would like to have been able to enjoy the story if the "sales catalog" approach of of repetitive brand names and styles and version numbers didn't thoroughly get in the way. It is no big deal to have an MP5 referred to over and over again as a MP5A3 . . . . but being told that the suppressor on the weapon is a "GemTech Raptor suppressor" eight times in nine pages is a bit much. Who cares if a guy is wearing a DSC/Cobra logo baseball cap? I'm not kidding you, the Brand and Style of the baseball cap! It is a real shame to hide a possibly decent book amidst all the repetitive micro-documentation of gear.

I really enjoyed reading about Reaper and the gang, so much so that I went back to Amazon.com and purchased the first one - Home Team Undeclared War. This story about a rogue Seal name Santiago is well told and entrtaining. The introductory chapters showing Santiago's skills acquired as a Seal being used for people he didn't respect nor like was easy to imagine. It begins with him breaking the drug lotd out of a high security prison. Even though one of his best men whom he respected got klled in the process, he kept on going, determined to get his "charge" out of harm's way. He eventually devise a plan to inegrate this guy back into society without being hunted by the FBI and every cop with a beat. I couldn't put it down. Reaper, the good Seal that stumbled up on some trouble his friend was having, is my kind of Seal and maybe he and Santiago will have a face-to-face meeting someday. Either way, it's action packed and a great read for anyone who enjoys military suspense novels.

This book is an incredible story that is beyond entertaining. This series of books details the incredible adventures of men trying to keep our country safe during a time when this is a very important issue. The threats are real and reading this book, I feel that the story and action could be real. The characters are grounded in real life and I think thats what makes it so appealing.

Harriman is a super writer and has a keen wit. I just finished this and really enjoyed the story. This is a page turner, and set in SW US border area. Book is very into (accurate) detail such a the gear the ex-seals carry and geography of the area. Strongly advise this book for you action adventure types. Part of what I like best about the author is a happy ending.

A page turner, granted it's nothing really new if you read Marcinko, McNabb, Weisman... But you get what you came for. The shopping list gets a little tiring though, brand name dropping at every chance.
