Editorial Reviews

The inventive and open-minded approach of Wallace Roney's previous HighNote releases is maintained on Home. Roney is taking the eclecticism of his influences and merging them into a coherent whole, be it Bebop, Post-Bop, Trane, Herbie Hancock and Weather Report Funk and Fusion, Hip Hop and, of course, Miles Davis, his guiding light. But Wallace Roney is mainstream only in the sense that he builds on what went before. And most importantly he does that with the essence of what jazz should be: A vehicle for self-expression, a conduit of the musical, mental and emotional self.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! April 24, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Wallace Roney has really come into his own the past few years. I purchased "If Only For One Night" which for me has been his best work so far and when I saw this was available wanted to hear it too. I wasn't disappointed. There are some similarities in sound here but some outstanding differences too. I was especially taken by the soulful playing on Evolution of the Blues by he and his brother, and a pretty ballad (I think it was Ghost of Yesterday). And the drum solo at the end is pretty nifty. I'd highly recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a great tradition. June 9, 2014

Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is nothing more than your typical lay back jazz in the tradition of the great musicians we all have come to admire, so why not give it a nod or two. No, there is nothing innovative about it but you will find that, like perhaps Terence Blanchard's "God's Will" or most anything by Dave Douglas, when you play it in the wee hour of the night it will bring you a sort of calm suitable for the moment. I mean it feels just right. Don't think of Roney and say, oh he is just a Davis knock off (which to me is sort of hypocritical when a so called "knock off of any other jazz great is a well come sight) Check out what the man is doing to bring the sounds we all love into the present. You will appreciate the effort. I for one love Home and I think you will too!
