The first time I listened to this album I knew it was recorded from a great singer. It's sounds in a blues way and I like it so much. The front cover isn't as good as I wish but it doesn't really matter because the songs are very nice. You must listen to it to know what I mean.

If you are looking for more Motown from Martha Reeves, buy one of the compilations. This is not your grandmother's Martha and the Vandellas. Ms. Reeves has matured and so has her voice. But there is someting on this CD for almost everyone. The new version of Jimmy Mack might attract a Motown lover, and it is great. However, it sounds like someone asked her to sing Jimmy Mack and she did. It is not "performed." My favorite track is "Watch your back," but others have identified "Uniform," "I Want your Company," "Running for Your Love," and "I Can't Believe It" as theirs. And then there is "God Bless the Child." I know that Simon would be honored to sit next to her behind the judging desk sharing her insights on what would make a good American Idol. After all, as a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she is one.

SOUNDS LIKE HOME,
By
This review is from: Home to You (Audio CD)
This time Martha has mixed up some down home sounds and is Servin' up some blues fresh from her soul kitchen. I truely love this set, however I must say, it's really for the fans, Those who Really love her because the songs are very personal. "Home To You" the tittle song was written for her son Eric, when he was a baby and she was on the road performing those famous one-niters. She sounds youthful on the new "Jimmy Mack", and all the true fans know that "God Bless The Child" has been a highlight in her live show for many many years. This CD was recorded in the motor city, However with the exception of "Jimmy Mack" and "I Want Your Company", it's not your traditional Motown sound. It's hot "grown folks" down in the dirt soul. This CD goes well with some good fried chicken, spankin' collards and some soul satisfying (Moma style) potato salad. Truely....Home To You. P.S.(Don't forget the cornbread!)

Martha Reeves is sorely undervalued, and her voice is under-utilized and this recent set is too good for words. Had Diana Ross not forcibly taken all the attention at Motown, perhaps the story of Miss Reeves' life and career would be different. Starting out as a secretary at Motown, Martha worked her way to the top - and did not have to perform any favors to get her just due. Martha rose above the turmoil at Motown and the vicious attacks leveled by Diana Ross - Martha was at least lucky in one regard: she never had to face off with Diana the way Gladys Horton of the Marvelettes did. Diana even threatened to run over Gladys Horton, but I digress.Diana Ross is said to be without a US contract and her recent demos have said to have been turned away by the conglomerate Universal where she supposedly had an option to still release new music. This makes her fellow Motown rival's comeback even more impressive. Approached by True Life Entertainment because of the original incarnation's wildly successful first pressing which, while distributed by Martha herself upon its release - almost three years ago, mind you- all things considered did smashingly well. Since the outpouring of support for the set portended huge things for Reeves,Martha in turn gladly submitted her original album which she released on her own indie label Itch Records in 2001 to the gold treatment making it even more user-friendly to appeal to Urban AC radio which reportedly had been feverishly demanding that the title-cut be serviced to them and its audiences. The set has been polished and it sparkles even more with funkier basslines on the title cut and shimmering ballads. Nothing can beat Martha's take on "God Bless The Child", a song which Ross has recorded, but Diana's cold delivery cannot compare to the heartfelt emoting of Reeves' rendition. The heavier bassline on the title-cut slows down the pacing of the song in comparison to the original, although it is a technique that proves startlingly effective: the funk works you in such a visceral way. The overall feel of the set is that which you would get from Martha live with nothing in the way that is overly synthetic despite the fact that some studio wizardy was applied to the homegrown vibe of the original. All in all, a very satisfying set from a pure legend in every sense who never sacrificed herself or her art to advance herself for the sake of stardom.

Poor Martha,

God bless this child, cause she is truly a mess. Martha is way beyond her glory years. To save face she should just retire. Her singing is beyond terrible. I have never heard a voice sound so bad. Simon would kick her out the building if she were a contestant on American Idol. Whats the deal with her voice anyway? She sounds like she is singing through a fan in the hazy hot days of summer. Save your money on this one folks. Go out and buy a Martha Reeves and the Vandellas CD.

Martha Reeves just keep expanding her musical genius and with this she has reached a new high.My personal favorite song is the Tittle Track 'Home To You"I think this song could be a major hit !Other favorites Watch Your Back,Uniform and I Want Your Company would make this cd worth it alone but you have other jewels to choose from like the fabulous "God Bless The Child" Good Days Gone and I Can't Believe it and if your a fan of Martha's previous hits you'll LOVE her new version of Jimmy Mack one of Martha's major hits from the 60's .If I could rate this cd a 10 I would !Shawn
