Book Description

In 1918, Susannah Braddock is devastated by the news that her beloved husband, Riley, has been killed in battle in France. Heartbroken, she turns to Tanner Grenfell for support. Though technically the Braddocks’ hired hand, Tanner has been helping Susannah run the family horse farm since Riley shipped out, and he has become a true and trusted friend. As time passes and Susannah’s grief begins to ebb, her friendship with Tanner deepens into love. They marry, committing their lives to running the farm and raising Tanner’s two young nephews.

But Susannah and Tanner’s newfound happiness is short lived. Two years after being reported dead, Riley Braddock returns home, shell-shocked and with no memory of his life before the war. All he can remember is Véronique, the French woman who rescued him during the final days of the war and nursed him back to health. Now the Red Cross has returned him to America—and to the wife he no longer knows. As for Susannah, she is torn between her love for Tanner and her loyalty to Riley.

Anchored by this dramatic dilemma, Alexis Harrington’s Home by Nightfall is a stirring testament to the incredible power of love to heal the human spirit.

Amazon.com Review

"Alexis Harrington has the incredible ability to turn dusty, destitute locales into lush gardens with her beautiful prose and heart-grabbing stories. Home by Nightfall takes a cast of already-loved characters and delves deeper into their lives after the first World War. Every single person and event is brought into the story while keeping a keen eye on the overall tone and maintaining very precise control over the plot. It is all of these remarkable skills that make Harrington's books impossible to put down and continually earn her a place on bestseller lists." 4 1/2 Stars, RT Reviews

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book August 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was well written and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I always enjoy reading these historical romance stories as it reminds me of stories I would hear from my grandmother.

Another GREAT romance novel I read by another great author named Susan Martillie is Romance Novels: Combat Tears. It's a great romance story set during World War II. Check it out for yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Heartwrenching Love Triangle July 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I am a Alexis Harrington fan. I did not read Home by Morning, the book before this one. I stayed away from it because of the love triangle. I don't really care for what love triangles do to my mind and heart. But, for some reason, I must have pre ordered this, because it popped up on my Kindle. Since I love Harrington, I read it. Oh my! I went back and forth and back and forth. I didn't know who to root for. This was an amazingly written novel. I wouldn't have expected any less. I just hate hate what all the heart ache does to my senses! If you want a gut wrenching heartfelt love triangle, this is for you. I will admit, for me to like a triangle enough to give it a good review, it is saying alot! For a non-love triangle great Harrington read try Harper's Bride! It is one of the few books I have read over and over!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but not as good as Home by Morning July 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book begins where Home by Morning left us, with Riley Braddock working on a Farm in France, having no clue who he is. We follow the progress of the Braddock family through the ordeal of welcoming their loved one back from the war, but this book just doesn't have the "oomph" of it's predecessor. Where "Home by Morning" had the central drama of the influenza epedimic, this one does not have one thing that ties all of the stories together. As a result, we end up feeling as if we are reading several stories with no central theme. I felt like this book was an extended version of the epilogue to "Home by Morning", where we saw what happened to all of the central characters from the preveious book. I enjoy Alexis Harrington's writing, but was not a huge fan of this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars The first book was better.
This second book dragged and was predictable. I wouldn't read this author again. I like to be surprised when reading a book and there were no surprises in this one for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good story poorly executed
Glaringly full of grammatical errors. Author doesn't understand the difference between en editor and a proofreader. Nice story, but not proofed.

More About the Author

I am a working novelist, with 14 books published over the past 20 years.

I'm thrilled to be able to bring to my readers my backlist through Kindle. There will be more titles new titles added in the months to come, plus I'm beginning the task of having my work translated into additional languages. Right now, I'm concentrating on Spanish.

I also make jewelry and I'm a fine needlework artist, specializing in embroidery, thread crochet, and sewing. I love to cook, read, entertain friends, decorate, and pursue various crafts.

I live in the Pacific Northwest near the Columbia River, still within 10 miles of my old high school. I have one cat, two Great Pyrenees (mixed), and three chickens who all seem to want to be in my small office while I'm trying to work (except the chickens, although they'd be thrilled to get into the house if I let them). Getting up to step around them is like maneuvering an obstacle course, but they are my children and so dear to me. My hours are kind of goofy--I'm just not a morning person and tend to be up late when the rest of the world is sleeping--and QUIET. No phones, faxes, distractions. Just the kids and me, candles burning, and the elevator music coming out of my CD player.

Before I made the leap to full-time writer, I spent about 12 years working for consulting civil engineers. Riprap, anyone? How about a nice detention pond?

I'll read just about anything written by Stephen King, Frank McCourt, or Martin Clark. A few of my favorite books are the Harry Potter series, the Outlander series, Angela's Ashes, A Farewell To Arms, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Observations, Lonesome Dove, A Garden of Sand, Gone With the Wind, Hummingbird, Trinity, and The Hunger Games trilogy. And yes, I'm an extra-sticky sucker for the Twilight series.

And someday, before one of us is snatched from this earth, I'd love to meet these people. They have either inspired my own work, impressed me with theirs, favorably impacted my life, made me think, performed brave deeds, or any combination thereof: Bruce Springsteen, Stephen King, Captain Sig Hansen, Jon Bon Jovi, LaVyrle Spencer, and Stephen Hawking.

(Captain Phil Harris was also on this list, but it was my great pleasure and good fortune to meet him in June 2008, 18 months before he passed away.)
