Poetry meets practicality,
By A Customer
This review is from: Home-Making (Hardcover)
This book is a gem.Written in the 1880's, this book illumines the poetic life of the family. Would it be controversial, if published now? Absolutely. It devalues autonomy, assumes the existence of absolutes, and certainly leads the reader to think that real poetry in life is found through surrendering autonomy and embracing your husband, wife, children, brother, sister. It's classic romance, but without fluff. The level of prose transcends anything published these days -- be ready to enjoy the english language at its finest. And be ready for a truly refreshing introduction to life as we should know it. Less harried, less materialistic, less self-introspective, and more appreciative of the things that give life meaning -- the people directly around us. This book teaches brothers how to care for sisters, and vice-versa. It teaches wives how to help their husbands become their best, and how men can bring out every facet of their wives' beauty. It even gives parents perspective in dealing with the loss of a child. This is not pop-psychology. This is wisdom.

A MUST for Every Family!,

DON'T LET THE TITLE FOOL YOU! It's not another how to wash the dishes or how to keep a cleaner house, but rather a guide for every family member to do their part in making the home everything God intended it to be. It has the following chapters: The Wedded Life (perfect for those engaged, so they know what they are committing to); The Husband's Part; The Wife's part; The Parents' Part; The Childrens' Part; Brothers and Sisters; The
Home-Life; Religion in the Home; Home Memories. Each chapter deals with a different person in the home...one excerpt says, "In home-making each member of the family has a part, and the fullest happiness and blessedness of the home can be attained only when each one's part is faithfully fulfilled. If any one member of the family fails in love or duty, the failure mars the whole household life, just as one discordant voice in a company of singers spoils the music, though all the others sing in perfect accord." It's an amazingly awesome book and is written in 19th century poetic style, making it very enjoyable to read! I was extremely impressed, as was my husband. The wisdom within the pages of this book are priceless and what's amazing, is that it is still relevent for today! However, it does raise the bar and will challenge everyone within the family. (It really zones in on how to treat one another) It's not too demanding, but very scriptural, the same standards that are in the Word of God. It will inspire you moms, and will show you the eternal value of raising your children...it's uplifting and made me (as a mom) feel like I'm doing a more worthy job than leading a corporation, or being the Queen of England! I only wish I had read this book 15 years earlier, when my kids were very little.

Don't be fooled by the title of this book - this is for husband, wife, and children! Not to mention those who are single! This book is very attune to the heart of Scripture, seeking to glorify God to the highest and impart to the reader the deep responsibility and beauty of fulfilling each family member's God-given roles! Quite the refreshment! Must read for engaged couples, invaluable resource for those married.

Home-Making is such an eloquent, endearing gem in these modern times. I have just purchased my second copy. The first copy was actually stolen, it is that good!It describes what each family members contribution of love is. Every one should read it.It makes a beautiful gift to any one.All my children will own it someday. It teaches, poeticly, what is truly required of the heart of a person, what love really is, the expression of love, and the bonds of love. It would make a great hope chest gift. There are so many people that do not truly know what love is. They are still looking for that special, missing gift in their life. This book will redirect you on to that beautiful path!

Another Must-Have for Serious Biblical Homemaking,

I have purchased 3 of this book and given them all away - two for wedding showers and one for my daughter's hope chest. It is a wholesome and biblically-based treatise for the centrality of home in a woman's life and focus. J.R. Miller does an excellent job at extolling the virtues of homemaking in a way that draws young women's hearts - sometimes challenged by the outward call of the culture- to whole-hearted preparation of the sanctuary of home for their families. Older women can be rekindled in their passion for their families and serving them in the God-honored position as mother and wife.

This book succinctly describes the beauty of the role of each member in the biblical family. It has been a source of hope and encouragement, in my walk as a Christian mother. Homemaking dwells on the importance of raising a godly family today, to reap the blessings therein, tomorrow.

This is probably one of the best books I have ever read. Despite the title, it is not just for housewives, it speaks intimately to each of the various roles within a home. To the husband, the wife, the parents, the children, brothers and sisters. Encouraging each member of the family to work together to make their home blessed retreat. Practical and poetic, it simultaneously presses my nose to the grindstone and sends my heart soaring with joy. A must read for the serious Christian family!

I wished I had read this 15 years ago!,
This review is from: Home-Making (Hardcover)
I think this book would be great for Newly Married couples. Dont let the girly looking cover fool you. Its packed full of examples on how to treat others. In the intro it said "the aim is to mark out duties and responsibilities of each member of the household..." I really enjoyed it and will have my children read it too.

Astounding Insight!,

I am stunned! Never have I read a book that has so much wisdom for the home and family, and I've read a bunch. Our society has slipped so far from nurturing and caring for each other in the home and this should be a must-read for anyone wanting or planning to be married. Although it is faith-based, it chock-full of everyday reasoning and insight that everyone can understand. If you're looking for clarity into the roles of the people who live in your home and how everyone can live up to their potential, this is the one to read.

A must for intentional family living,
This review is from: Home-Making (Hardcover)
This book is not really a book about "homemaking" in the sense of housekeeping. This is a deeply lovely book about what the experience of living in a happy home should be like. This book was written years ago, when people still had the idea that the home and the people in it should be a haven for each other, and a beacon to those in the world. This is a book that calls husbands and wives, siblings, sons and daughters, to a higher vision of a home. It reminds that all are part of this goal.
This is not just a book for moms, though, despite the picture on the cover. One of the most intimate nights my newlywed husband and I have experienced was when I read aloud to him the chapter on Husbands. Just thinking about how we can love each other better and the deep responsibility that is was very meaningful for us. I highly recommend this book -- the language alone is lovely to read. The style of the book is peaceful and lyrical. This is not a typical self-help book; this is a peaceful, worshipful book. A MUST for newlyweds, or anyone who wants to be intentional and biblical about their marriage and family life. |
