Editorial Reviews

Homebrew is a unique album from Steve Howe composed of rough first drafts and acoustical attempts at songs that went on to become quite famous. While some of the songs here were adopted by GTR and Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe, many of the others st

4.0 out of 5 stars super demos November 22, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Don't let the fact that these are home recorded demos throw you off- the quality is high- these are polished pieces and the cd could serve as Steve's "greatest hits" except that these are seminal, alternate versions of some of his better known (at least to YES fanatics) work; offering some interesting insights into the music's development. Anyway, these are not just curiosities, they stand up very well on their own and the album as a whole is the best Steve Howe album around-

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting peek January 20, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Steve Howe the guitarist is superb; Steve Howe the singer shouldn't quit his day job. The meat and potatoes of this collection of Howe's home recordings are his "guitar suites," the various instrumentals he recorded with massive overdubs from his stringed arsenal that make all of them wonderful to listen to. You also get the demos of songs that eventually became full-blown Yes pieces. It's an interesting view of how some of the tunes evolved---all featuring several good reasons why Jon Anderson is the lead singer for Yes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Steve Howe Homebrew I September 22, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This album is for listeners who want to hear the beginning gestations of songs that were further developed, and became either parts of songs or lesser known pieces to an album. It is interesting to hear the genesis of some of these songs in their rough versions when the final versions are already known. I look forward to obtaining the later renditions of "Homebrew" songs, versions 3 and 4. If you want the polished versions, don't go here.....but if you want a peak at how things start and develope.....here you are!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Look Inside the Mind of Steve Howe August 5, 2001
Format:Audio CD
In the progressive rock world, Steve Howe is a legend. This album is an interesting look at the writing process of the man. It is basically a collection of demos that Howe worked on before they would become heard in full form with Asia, GTR, and ABWH, as well as on his solo albums. Therefore, if you're a fan of these bands, it is quite a treat to hear songs like "Red and White" (what would be the basis of "Birthright" on _ABWH_), "Never Stop Learning" (would be used in "Brother of Mine" on _ABWH_), and "More About You" (what would be used in "Quartet" on _ABWH__). In addition, "Rare Birds" is known as the unreleased track "Vultures" from the original ABWH Sessions and the version on this album alone arguably justifies buying the CD. Howe sings on about half of the tracks, and it should be kept in mind that these are more or less "advanced demos", but for all of those who have followed Howe's career, this is essential.
