Editorial Reviews

Review

"Al Korzonas has become well-known in recent years for his extensive participation in electronic forums such as The Homebrew Digest. He has patiently fielded questions from beginning brewers and has been widely praised for his assistance. This experience has given him a particular sensitivity to the needs of elementary and intermediate brewers, and to issues other authors often take for granted. All of this is well-captured in this book and those who are looking for a well-written introduction can do no better than this one." -- Dr. George Fix, Chairman, Department of Mathematics, University of Texas at Arlington. Author, Principles of Brewing Science, Vienna/Oktoberfest/Maerzen, and Analysis of Brewing Techniques Arlington, Texas

"As a brewer for over 50 years in both Europe and America, including many as a homebrewer, I can appreciate the challenges of brewing quality beer that I am proud to share with my friends. Al Korzonas has provided an excellent guide to the homebrewing enthusiast. The beginner, novice or even expert now has a great asset to help improve their skills. Homebrewing - Volume I provides a comprehensive look at the brewing process. Everything from equipment to ingredients to process are included in this must-have tool for the homebrewer." -- Pierre Celis, Master Brewer/Founder, Celis Brewery, Austin, Texas

"Tells you exactly how to do it, step by step... catches your mistakes before you make them. A hands-on, practical guide from someone who knows." -- Michael Jackson, Internationally-renowned Beer Writer, Author, The Simon & Schuster Pocket Guide to Beer, The New World Guide to Beer, The Great Beers of Belgium, and Michael Jackson's Beer Companion London, England

Overall, an excellent reference for brewers at a broad range of expertise. I've been extract brewing (and reading like crazy) for a couple of years. I still wound up with a page of references to new ideas and useful info, and that's not counting the recipe and materials tables. My only "must-read" is the Bible but I'd certainly recommend this to anyone on [The Homebrew Digest], or as a first book on brewing -- Sam Mize, Homebrew Digest #2625, Sunday 01 February 1998

From the Publisher

Al Korzonas is one of the most knowledgeable writers in the field of amateur brewing. He has been brewing since 1987, has won over 100 awards for his beers, has written many articles on beer and brewing, and has attained the rank of Master in the Beer Judge Certification Program. This book is unique in that the reader need only read chapter two to brew their very first batch of beer. Al explains all aspects of brewing in terms that anyone can understand and provides more troubleshooting information than most of the other homebrewing books combined. The book is fully referenced, contains more than 50 recipes and an entire chapter dedicated to teaching the reader how to create their own original recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A virtual encyclopedia, all in one book!, April 23, 2000

If I could only buy one book for homebrewing, this would be it. I have most of the "basic" books, and have studied for & passed (with an 80) the BJCP exam, so I've read a bunch of homebrewing books. Al's book is the most complete I've seen. The details on hops & yeast types are exhaustive. Although this one is titled Volume 1, I don't see why any more volumes are needed for the typical brewer. Al has an enormous amount of information in these pages, but his style includes jokes and thus it is quite easy to read. You will not regret having bought this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for extract brewers, February 12, 2006
This review is from: Homebrewing - Volume I (Paperback)
This is a good resource for beginning/intermediate extract brewers but it has no information on all-grain brewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was my first brewing book..., February 2, 2006

And it continues to be useful. Korzonas writes in a very appoachable manner with excellent layout of techniques and ingredients. I hoped for volume II, but he hasn't got to it yet... If you're just starting out this would be an excellent book to add to that "basic brewing equipment" kit you're purchasing! It will take you through from "What is this for?" to "Hey, let's brew this!". Excellent book. Full marks.
