A virtual encyclopedia, all in one book!,

This review is from: Homebrewing - Volume I (Paperback)
If I could only buy one book for homebrewing, this would be it. I have most of the "basic" books, and have studied for & passed (with an 80) the BJCP exam, so I've read a bunch of homebrewing books. Al's book is the most complete I've seen. The details on hops & yeast types are exhaustive. Although this one is titled Volume 1, I don't see why any more volumes are needed for the typical brewer. Al has an enormous amount of information in these pages, but his style includes jokes and thus it is quite easy to read. You will not regret having bought this book.

This is a good resource for beginning/intermediate extract brewers but it has no information on all-grain brewing.

And it continues to be useful. Korzonas writes in a very appoachable manner with excellent layout of techniques and ingredients. I hoped for volume II, but he hasn't got to it yet... If you're just starting out this would be an excellent book to add to that "basic brewing equipment" kit you're purchasing! It will take you through from "What is this for?" to "Hey, let's brew this!". Excellent book. Full marks.

New and good.,
This review is from: Homebrewing - Volume I (Paperback)
After reading almost any intoductory books on the subject, i see, it is a scaring away... or interesting book. After reading too much don't worry have a brew books. I must admit it goes do the center of the problem. And that's sanitatition and HSA. I saw lot's of good brew by chance, but in the end it was either or both. So some guys told me(here in Europe) that our ancient counterparts didn't even know about sanitation, they made good beer. They are right but the other important thing Korzonas mentions is pitching rate. It is the most important in my opinion. So my rate is: Best Beginner Book in print!!! Im waiting for pat II

The Best Beginner to Intermediate Book Currently Available,
By A Customer
This review is from: Homebrewing - Volume I (Paperback)
This book is the best compilation of current American homebrewing practice generally available. It takes a rational, stepwise approach throughout, starting with brewing one's first batch. Extensive troubleshooting sections help with problem-solving, and tables with formulation of the brewer's own recipes. References are available so readers can consult original sources as they like. The most used book in my homebrew library.

Korzonas tells you why, so you actually listen,

This review is from: Homebrewing - Volume I (Paperback)
I'm an intermediate brewer with four years experience. Korzonas' book is all about brewing from extract. Oh, how I wish volume II on full grain brewing would be published. Of all the brewing books I've seen his is hands down the best. Very helpful is the fact that he tells you WHY instead of just WHAT with the result that you actually LISTEN and brew better beer.
He covers every ingredient in beer with many helpful charts. He does this without being overly technical and giving you information you really have no need for. He's interested in helping the home brewer not displaying his wonderful researching capabilities. He also corrects common bad-advice offered in other brewing books - and again, tells you WHY it's bad advice. I often say brewing is a fun hobby because you can brew drinkable beer on your first try, but you can also get as technical and precise as you want(and the more you brew, the more you want). Korzonas' book offers you an easy starting chapter that allows you to simply brew your first batch. Then he gives you the rest.

I have not read this book. Ihave skimmed sections of it and am very impressed. Ihave read a half dozen or more other books and only one other comes close. If you only buy one book on home brewing you can't go wrong with this one. The Owd Hop Head.

I love to teach myself. I started out with Charlie Papazian's book. That book was very helpful and pointed out a few things I might not have instantly associated. After my first 5-gallon batch I had more questions about the process as I was looking for finer details on the different stages. The Papazian book is definitely an excellent resource. When I got the Korzonas book I thought "Here I go just doubling up and not expanding." How wrong I was. It expands on the basics to an intermediate level. There is definitely a wealth of information in this book. I can't wait to see what Volume II will be like. I will say these last things and let you on your way. Armed with only 4 things you will always brew excellent beer. Remember C. Papazian's beautiful mantra "Relax don't worry, have a homebrew."

By A Customer
This review is from: Homebrewing - Volume I (Paperback)
This book is one of the best beginner to intermediate brewing books available on the market today. Al has tons of charts, and information that advanced brewers will refer to all the time. Its well organized, and documented. He shows his resources, so you can get more information, and his claims are all backed up. Can't wait for Vol. 2!!
