5.0 out of 5 stars Homecoming/Tillerman Family, October 4, 2007
This review is from: Homecoming (Hardcover)
Cynthia Voigt's creation of the Tillerman family is poignant and mesmerizing. By the end of the series, the reader knows, loves, and admires Dicey, her three siblings, Gram, and the other people that comprise the Tillerman extended family. The last book about the Tillerman family, Seventeen Against the Dealer, does justice to the excellent character and story development that Voigt created in the previous six books. Read Homecoming, Dicey's Song, and then any of the companion books (Solitary Blue; Sons from Afar; The Runner; Come a Stranger) before reading Seventeen Against the Dealer. I couldn't wait for Seventeen to be published but then I was sad that the Tillerman saga had ended. Excellent writing; Voigt addresses multi-faceted themes including autonomy within a family; independence; family dysfunction and cohesion without getting preachey. Voigt is one of my top two favorite authors; I use Homecoming and Dicey's Song in my junior high English classes and end up rereading all seven books every year for the sheer pleasure of visiting the family and friends again. Voigt's Tillerman family is real, imperfect, and makes me wish I lived next door to them and their Maryland farm.
