Gotta read it fast... But love it!,

This review is from: Homedics SC-540 LCD 400 lb/180 kg Capacity Bath Scale with Body Composition Scanner (Health and Beauty)
The SC-540 is a very light-weight product, can be easily moved around. Large lettering to see your stats clearly. It shows you what your last reading was when you turn it on. Only complaint: you have to read the stats very quick and know what the numbers mean because it flashes on for 1-2 seconds with 2 sets of 5 indexes on each screen. (whew, all in one breath!). You also have to be barefoot with your feet slightly moist to get your readings, so be ready to stand on some cold stainless steel for about 10 seconds!

Does what it sets out to do,
This review is from: Homedics SC-540 LCD 400 lb/180 kg Capacity Bath Scale with Body Composition Scanner (Health and Beauty)
Prior to purchasing this scale, I had a cheap 25 dollar one that only checked body fat. Now I know my body fat wasnt 17% because the scale at school said it was around 8%. Since then Ive lost weight but my old scale still said I was around 15% body fat.I decided to purchase a new scale because the old one eventually broke. This thing works amazingly! It is as accurate as the one at the University as well. Id reccomend this scale to anyone who is trying to work towards their goals of losing weight and dropping body fat. The extra features are a bonus to an otherwise wonderful piece of equipment.

Display clears too quickly to read,

This review is from: Homedics SC-540 LCD 400 lb/180 kg Capacity Bath Scale with Body Composition Scanner (Health and Beauty)
Pros: Accurate weight, the backlit screen is easy to read, and it includes a number of useful measures (fat %, water %, etc.).Cons: The full display moves too quickly to read. It displays each screen for all of two seconds. Truthfully, the fast-clear display has been enough of a problem for me that I'm returning the scale. I bought the scale because I wanted to see those measures, but they pass too quickly. It's not impossible -- you can get the display to repeat that 2-second cycle over and over -- but it was too much like work, and I eventually gave up.

I think it's a weight issue...,

This review is from: Homedics SC-540 LCD 400 lb/180 kg Capacity Bath Scale with Body Composition Scanner (Health and Beauty)
I purchased this scale about a week ago. I was very excited that it measures not just weight but fat, water, muscle mass and bone mass. Took it home very eager to see what it had to say, I got my weight (wasn't happy with the number I got, but that's my issue). The scale was accurate. Then I got an Err msg for all the other measurement areas, so I tried everything the booklet said, to no avail. Thinking it was broken, I asked my son to try, and it worked great for him, so I tried again & still got the Err msg. Asked my other son to try, again, it worked great, everything came up. I tried all kinds of things, but it still doesn't work. I think it might be a technical flaw. Both my sons are under 200 lbs and all measurements came up without a problem for them. I, on the other hand am over 200 lbs. and believe that there is an issue with weight vs. other measurements. Homedics should take a look at it because everyone in my household under 200 lbs gets their readings without a problem. I think I will keep the scale for them, also, it gives me incentive to lose so that I too can get all my measurements.

Inconsistent definitions of "athelet" depending on which manual you read,
This review is from: Homedics SC-540 LCD 400 lb/180 kg Capacity Bath Scale with Body Composition Scanner (Health and Beauty)
I purchased this scale hoping to find out what my body composition was without tedious skin fold or tape measure tests, and I was intrigued by the different settings for athletes. To my dismay, however, the paperwork that came with the scale offered two very different definitions of "athlete". According to the quick start guide, and athlete is someone who engages in aerobic exercise for at least one hour a day, 5 days a week. But according to the longer manual, an athlete is someone who engages in 12 hours of aerobic exercise a week. The quick start guide would consider me an athlete, but the longer manual would not. As such, I weighed myself on both settings hoping that the difference wouldn't be to great since I qualified for both categories--but there was a 8 percentage point difference depending on the mode. According to one reading, I could loose some body fat and still be healthy, but according to the other I am dangerously low. So if you are a "borderline athlete" like me, this scale might not be so helpful.

My husband and I did not purchase this through Amazon, we got it at another store that had dozens of bathroom scales so we could try them. This scale is the ONLY one that gave us the same reading each time we moved it, including moving it from their low-pile carpet to the linoleum. Others fluctuated by as much as 6 pounds... ridiculous. Not this beauty. I can weigh myself now without wondering if the reading is just how I stepped on it or the angle it's at etc. LOVE IT!

Great scale for everyday use, looks really cool in your bathroom. If you want to try the fat, water, muscle, bone mass settings do it after taking a shower with your feet a little wet. Try the athletic setting like some people have suggested. You can create different profiles for your whole family. The scale includes batteries and it works great doing its primary function which is giving you accurate weight readings. Additional readings for body fat and such should be use for reference only.

Doesn't work as advertised,

I bought this scale specifically for the body composition features. I had a Tanita before which worked great, but it only measured Body Fat %. This scale (Homedics SC-540) claims to measure Body Fat, Muscle, Water and Bone percentages. The problem I am having is that I only ever get an "Err" message when I try to get my body composition. The scale portion works fine and provides an accurate weight in large, bright, backlit numerals. After the scale has displayed my weight, it attempts to calulate my body composition. It always ends up with an "Err" message. I have moistened my feet, tried using it after a shower, re-read the manual, yet I cannot get it to display my body composition. It is very frustrating. I will probably return it.

I bought this product several months ago, and thought I was going crazy when everyday I would be--to the ounce--exactly the same weight. So, I experimented, and stood on the scale with a book in my hands (or fully clothed)...and it would be the same weight! This scale only works when I really lost weight or really gained weight--like a solid pound and a half. To top it off, it would tell me that, as a female weighing 147 pounds, I was eating over 2700 calories a day. I calorie-counted, I checked online with all I ate for weeks, and the most I ate in a day was 2300--at the highest! Normally, it would about 1800, almost a 1,000 calories less! This thing is a piece of junk. All the options are a waste of time; I'm going to buy another scale that just reads my weight and be done with it. Yay technology. |
