This books covers all the issues that you need to be concerned with in order to turn your suburban lot (or condo, or even apartment patio!) into a productive kitchen garden. The topics that the author covers include location, the types of raised beds or containers you will use, the kind of soil you will need for intensive and small space gardening, choosing your plants, maintenance, controling pests, and off season care of your garden. The last chapter is a collection of recipes to inspire you to use what you grow.

One interesting thing I learned in this book: I did not realize that in a smaller area you can pack the plants in closer than recommended if you use the right organization and type of soil. I always assumed that the spacing recommendations on the back of the seed package were requirements but the author suggests that with extremely fertile soil and proper plant placement (tall plants in the center, short on the outside, etc) your garden will grow fine in a slightly crowded area. I can not say whether this actually works seeing as I haven't tried it yet but I will next spring! I hope to get my garden beds to increase their yield with this technique!

At first, I was a little unsure of the recipes in the last chapter. The names sounded very exotic (Basmati Rice with Spices, Pistachios and Calendula or Roasted Chicken Salad with Celery, Herbs and Croutons). Once I started actually reading through the recipes, though, I realized that the names may sound complicated but the recipes are really not! They are actually fairly simple with only a handful of ingredients. I look forward to trying them!

Loved this book. I'm a beginner vegetable gardener and this book was fun to read as well as super helpful. I especially loved the plans for gardens in different seasons. The recipes seem delicious and gourmet - I haven't tried any yet, but they are very inspirational.

I have purchased this book in the spring. So far I have used only a portion of the techniques described as I did not have an opportunity for a full vegetable garden. I used the potting method on herbs and soil amendment recommendations for both herbs and flowers. Both worked wonderfully. I have never had such an abundance especially in herbs. It is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it and I look forward to next spring when I can plant my first full vegetable garden.

This is a great resource for building full-fledged vegetable garden using only raised beds and containers. I'm putting it to use!

I came away with some good ideas from this book and the recipes. When spring comes I will be reading it again.
