Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Onion's claim to being America' Finest News Source may have its tongue pressed firmly in cheek, but it is certainly America's most wryly ludicrous and, at times, the most honest. As expected, the usual stuffed shirts are given their fair share of lampooning ("Bush Vows to Eliminate U.S. Dependence on Oil by 4920," "Evangelical Scientists Refute Gravity with New 'Intelligent Falling' Theory"), but where the Onion really excels is in exposing the inner hilarity of your average nincompoop ("Investigators Blame Stupidity in Area Death," "Area Man Looking for Whatever the Hell Is Beeping"). The finest material comes from simply pointing out how a lot of people are really dumb, pathetic, and not at all heartwarming. Which is itself oddly reassuring. The fake news phenomenon has never been more culturally popular, and nearing its twentieth year, the Onion still ranks among its foremost stalwarts. This collection features the entire archive from November 2004 to December 2005, and while devotees will have already read most of the content, newcomers will be thrilled to titter over these headlines. 4.0 out of 5 stars Beats Watching the News!, November 2, 2006
This review is from: Homeland Insecurity: The Onion Complete News Archives, Volume 17 (Onion Ad Nauseam) (Paperback)
Headlines include "Oprah Celebrates Losing 20,000 Pound" (after about 467 different diets), "Ashcroft Loses Job to Mexican," "Bankrupt U.S. Sold to China," "Cost of Living Now Outweighs Benefits," and "Local Fox Affiliate Debuts Terror Alert Van" (flashes current Terror Alert color for Murfreesboro, TN., equipped with English-Arabic phrase book for translating any intercepted al-Qaeda correspondence).

Other stories include how the Swift Boat Vets intend to continue hounding Sen. Kerry (currently questioning whether he had really earned a free cup at Starbucks), a detailed story behind a project manager leaving behind a suicide power-point presentation (how he had used its full multimedia capabilities, along with the outline of his material), and V.P. Cheney's problems after being dropped by his HMO for pre-existing conditions.

Lots more fun that watching the news!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, December 9, 2006

The Onion presents Homeland Insecurity is yet another edition of this spoof news series. The Onion is a free publication that is available mostly in college towns. This book just lumps the past year's articles into a bound edition.

Every article is rip-roaring hilarious. Nothing is sacred. It rips on anything and everything. Great stuff. I recommend it to anyone with at least a mild sense of humor.

This review is from: Homeland Insecurity: The Onion Complete News Archives, Volume 17 (Onion Ad Nauseam) (Paperback)
The excellent news parody The Onion has bound together another collection of their weekly newspaper, telling us their readers stories the main networks don't seem to want to tell us. The Onions inside are from the editions published online and in print between the 18th of November 2004 and the 14th December 2005. Some of the stories within are a bit shorter as they are incomplete than their original online format but the humour happens in what is there along with the headlines.

Whilst the Onion has a huge cult following, not everyone has heard of it. If you've enjoyed parody news TV shows such as CNNN or its still going spin off The Chaser then this is the book for you. Also if you're still unsure about buying this book you can just type in the onion dot com into your computer see the latest Onions and you'll know what your getting.

Other great parody fiction is out there but to name three you may be interested in if you enjoyed this book are Where's Bin Laden? by Daniel Lalic which is an excellent parody of the Where's Wally (Waldo in North America) series. 101 Places Not to Visit: Your Essential Guide to the World's Most Miserable, Ugly, Boring and Inbred Destinations by Adam Russ which is an excellent parody of those travel books that only mention the good things about destinations. The Self-Destruction Handbook: 8 Simple Steps to an Unhealthier You is an excellent and extremely funny parody of all those annoying self help books that want to make you a better you.
