5.0 out of 5 stars Buy It, August 4, 2002

A little less experimental than his later releases, but more rocky with Chuck playing more guitar, this is a fantastic cd. Credit, Ooh Wee, Inside Track and several others have a kind of Stones meet Tom Petty groove. New Year's Day is one of Chuck's best ballads. Buy it already!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ooh Wee!, March 27, 2007

Chuck Prophet was recently recommended to me as a great way to diversify my music collection. It was one of the best tips I've had in years. Since getting the CD, I just can't stop playing it. The generally feeling of the collection is that of vocally intense, minor key country rock at it's finest. The closest analogy I can make is to Tom Petty (especially on the wonderful "Whole Lot More,") but Prophet is not an imitator, as the range of musical elements is too diverse to be strictly derivative.

The best songs on the CD are "Whole Lot More" complete with a fabulous mandolin part, and "Ooh Wee," my favorite of the bunch. Prophet spans a lot of genres, but I think the upbeat country rock pieces are the most successful. "22 Fillmore" is interesting and mentally summons an unusual blend of The Ramones and The Who from long ago, although the lyrics get repetitive toward the end. Other great tracks include "Homemade Blood" and "Textbook Case," the latter of which contains an interesting foray into electronic music.

After buying this CD, I am sure that I will be buying more music from Prophet. I highly recommend this CD to any music lover, especially those who like original rough-hewn country rock.

A great cd. A mix of roots rock and blues done raunchy, simple, and cool as hell. Chuck's a great underrated talent and this is probably his best release, although it's a close call since all of his stuff is highly recomended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice find, February 16, 2008

If you're not singing along and tapping your toe to "Credit" the second time you hear it, you don't like rock and roll.
Channels a bit like Tom Petty's "Let Me Up, I;ve Had Enough" but he definitely has his own style.
Like the Yeats reference...
Will be buying more of this fella's stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars A Promise for the future, December 31, 2003

Well "Homemade Blood" is worth it`s money alone for the first song "Credit" the rest is thaughtful and reflective and you have first to adjust to it,which is hard after such a Killer-song as "Credit" is,Chuck prophet would deserve more attention (I`ve no idea if he would like this)his whole body of work,if one can say that about someone just at the beginning ,is a promise for the future and along with groups like Wilco etc. one of America`s musical megaphones (I`m from Europe)I mean they`re keeping the inventory of social sensitivities.
