Book Description

September 5, 2006
Preparing high-quality, home-cooked meals in record time has never been easier--or more delicious!

You can enjoy that special homemade taste without spending hours in the kitchen. The new generation of convenience foods--like precut produce and premarinated meats--make it possible to enjoy outstanding home-cooked meals, fast! You simply need to know what ingredients to buy, what cooking techniques to use, and when you can safely slash preparation and cooking time without sacrificing taste.

Here readers will learn how to shave 3 hours off Chicken Pot Pie with Biscuits or how to make a Clementine Tart with White Chocolate Macadamia Cookie Crust in only 8 minutes of hands-on time. In fact, more than 50 recipes require only five ingredients or less (plus salt and pepper). And readers will get two meals for the work of one with Double-Duty Dinners (learning, for instance, how to transform a set-aside portion of Roasted Chicken and Turnips in Peanut Sauce into Thai Chicken Noodle Salad). Menus and shopping guides make planning for a week's meals as hassle-free as possible.

With more than 200 streamlined recipes and a wealth of ingenious time-saving tips, Homemade in Half the Time is the perfect cookbook for 21st-century America, when people's schedules are more hectic than ever yet they are more demanding about the flavor and healthfulness of the meals they eat.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Difficult to Use, June 17, 2009
This review is from: Homemade in Half the Time: Over 200 Easy and Delicious Recipes for Everyday (Paperback)
I found that this cookbook is great in theory but many of the ingredients were just plain wierd or things you would not usually have on hand. I grocerey shop for my family and some of the prepared ingredients I have never seen on a regular grocery store shelf. For example "can of diced tomatoes with burgundy wine and olive oil" and also the heavy use of prepared items would not make the recipes in this book very budget friendly. I think that the few minutes saved using these recipes would not be worth the high cost of preparing the dish itself. There are other books that do a better job of mixing fast with cost effective and if you decided to prepare the ingredients yourself to save money then the book loses its appeal all together. On the otherhand there are some interesting recipes that I haven't tried yet but do look pretty good, especially the breakfast items.

It's fine if one has all the canned soups and cake mixes on hand. Otherwise it's another novelty cookbook.

The recipes are easy to make, but taste like you spent a long time making them. I don't always use the "time saving methods" (buying chopped vegetables or prepared garlic, etc), but it helps when you're in a hurry. I also like the fact that the recipes use a variety of ingredients and are from different regions/nationalities. A good, all-around cookbook for those of us on the go.
