Keeping Bees is one in a series of books from author Ashley English for the Homemade Living line. Each one (Home Dairy, Keeping Chickens, and Canning & Preserving) presents detailed, but accessible, information for the urban homesteader...These books are adorable and chock-full of info, too. This volume provides the bee basics, but then goes on to discuss things to consider before raising bees (your neighbors, allergies, pets and kids, legal ramifications, etc.), how to house them (and where), feeding options, equipment must-haves, where to purchase them and how to maintain a healthy hive, and, of course, their magical byproduct: honey (along with recipes to try!)...It also includes checklists, as well as suggestions for requeening, preventing a swarm, dividing the hive and more.” --Urban Farm

“English's warm, encouraging tone, along with plenty of detailed photos of every stage of the process, make this book a must-have for novice beekeepers...I highly recommend Keeping Bees with Ashley English: All You Need to Know to Tend Hives, Harvest Honey & More to anyone who is considering keeping bees. It gives you a good idea of what to expect, so you can decide if you want to take the next step toward beekeeping.” --About.com Organic Gardening

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy the book! March 10, 2011
Format:Hardcover
As beekeepers for 45 years we don't buy bee books often as they rarely offer anything new but Keeping Bees is an exception. The text and excellent photographs offer the promise that you can manage a colony of bees even if you don't have a mentor watching over your shoulder. Often my husband is so speedy at opening a hive that I don't really understand what he is doing so I really liked the concise step-by-step photo sequences. The bee journals can be too technical but this book strikes the right balance of information for anyone aspiring to be a beekeeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners. February 20, 2011
By Beck120
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have been waiting for this book to be published ever since I purchased the first two books in Ashley English's "Homemade Living" series. I have been researching bee keeping for about a year now, mostly because I plant a garden every year and would like to give it a boost, but also because I am fascinated by honeybees and would like to have my own honey source. I love this book because it is packed with great information but is not overwhelming. English tackles the most important lessons of beekeeping and stays on task. After reading this, I definitely think I can manage a couple of hives, and I am really excited to get started. Bottom line: if you're thinking about keeping bees, read this book first.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you ever wanted to know about keeping bee hives February 19, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I love this book, because it is filled with wonderful information about the life of bees and how to harvest your own honey in your own backyard. The book is filled with great images and easy to follow tutorials how to set up hives and how to maintain them. I am not a beekeeper, but I grow my own fruits and vegetables in order to have access to truly organic food and I am considering keeping my own beehive after reading this book.
