I originally bought this book because it was about and african american family and I wanted my toddler to identify with any race not just our own. I didn't expect the book to be so beautiful and truly lovely, my daughter broke a jar just like the little girl in the book and everytime we get to that part she always compares herself to honey dew drop :) and it makes me so happy because not once has she asked why the family is of a different color so I believe my plan is working.

Not only do I love bell hooks writing for adults, but my baby loves the rhythm of her kid's lit. I don't call him "Girlpie" but I love that he has a book about girls, lest he be too smothered by trains and dinosaurs. The cadence is great and he adores the illustrations, which is not always true of picture books and six-month-olds. He sits through this one better than Goodnight Moon!

One of the most read books in our house - my two year old LOVES this book and requests for it be read to her almost every night before bed. She loves the lesson, that a little can make mistakes and still be loved, and is drawn to the beautifully drawn images and simple straight forward language. This, along with "Happy to be Nappy" (my daughter calls it "Happy to Nappy") are two great books by bell hooks.

I am usually not one to leave comments and reviews but I had to for this book. My sister bought this book for my 18 month daughter for Christmas, and I was pleased because it was about a little girl and her African American family- something my daughter can relate to. What interest me most is that this book helps children understand that mommies and daddies love unconditionally.

I must add that my daughter has at least twenty children's books (all great reads) but this is one of her favorites. Just yesterday she had me read it 5 times.

My husband and I frequently take our two year old toddler shopping for new books... Homemade Love is a jewel! It is a story about unconditional parental love and reaches across all races and ages. My daughter wants to read it every night before going to bed... It is a very peaceful smooth-flowing picture book. The fact that it is about a loving African American family makes it even more endearing and holds a special place in our hearts. The illustrations are scrumptious! Thanks to bell hooks, I have been inspired to refer to my little one as my- honey bun chocolate dew drop- on more than one occasion!

My mother is an early childhool development techer and consultant. She asked me to order this book for her to use in the classroom and at siminars. Although I can not comment myself (I have not read the book); I can say that this is a personal pick from a an award winning educator of 30 years.
