2.0 out of 5 stars Three BARELY pertinent pages out of 34?, December 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Homemade Semtex: C-4's Ugly Sister (Paperback)
By far, this is Seymour Lecker's MOST comprehensive book of the 3 I have read so far, so I would place this one in at least the bottom 1% of what is available from other authors. The other two Lecker books are NOT worth buying: "Explosive Dusts - Advanced Improvised Explosives," and "Poor Man's TNT - Improvised Guncotton."

Over 55% of the book copies simple descriptive general information straight out of an industrial chemical manual for 10 chemicals used in the manufacture of Semtex.

There is the equivalent of one page each on making PETN and RDX (the main ingredients for Semtex) or about 150 to 240 words total for each one, and one page or 200 words on how to make Semtex from them.

Again, Lecker only uses simple generalities and neglects to tell the details of how, why, when, where. He doesn't tell how to truly make each component and Semtex, just copies a chemical cookbook style directions of, "do this, pour that, heat the other," with no further explanation.

Perhaps Lecker is trying to get people to attempt to make all these chemicals and explosives in the hope that they will give up in frustration and failure or blow themselves up. Could Lecker really be an Agent Provocateur?

Again, as in the other two books mentioned above, DON'T waste your money on this book as there are other books that do an appropriate job.

I can't end this review without at least saying one good thing about this book: the only redeeming value is that the bibliography lists six sources that you CAN get the information from.

This is a great book on how to make Semtex, the terrorists plastique of choice. If you like this kind of stuff read Homemade C-4, by Ragnar Benson
