Super Brazilian Sounds,
By Mal (Berkeley, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Homenagem Brasileira (Audio CD)
How lucky for us...Sandy performs regularly in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was refreshing to hear such wonderful Brazilian sounds from a local group of first rate musicians. Even though originally from the East Coast, Sandy's Brazilian Portuguese sounds good (a Brazilian colleague of mine couldn't quite figure out which part of Brazil she was from!). Marcos Silva's arrangements are stunning and the recording mix and balance are super. The rest of the band (Harvey Wainapel, Celso Alberti, David Belove) all work together wondefully well. Hard to pick a favorite track although Jeff Cressman's trombone work on Porque Somos Iguais is, in a word, beautiful. I've worn the CD out...time for another copy....

Sandy is an astonishing singer -- technically polished yet understated. She makes it sound easy. Flawless production by Marcos Silva and a world-class band makes this U.S.-made record the equal of the best coming out of Brazil today. (As a bass player, I especially apreciate David Belove's masterful work.) A finger-snapping, spellbinding record!

Sandy is a great singer (since the time when she used to be with vocal group Pastiche)and she belongs to an elite of non-Brazilian female singers who standout like: Kevyn Lettau, Pamela Driggs, Karrin Allyson, Laura Fygi, Kerry Linder etc. but I think Sandy and Pamela are slightly ahead of the rest.
Even Brazilian pianist Jovino Santos-Neto has praised her above any other non-Brazilian singers based on her repertoire. I think the edge (at least in this CD), is the invaluable addition of one of the best Jazz keyboardists come out of Brazil in many years; none other than Maestro: Marcos Silva, ex-member of fantastic Brazilian Jazz group "Viva Brazil" and leader of his own Brazilian Jazz group "Intersection". Here, Marcos Silva is the band Music Director, Producer, Arranger, Keyboardist, Guitar Player, Percussionist, and all of this is one of the two reasons why this CD sounds sooo good, he brings that Brazilian touch that validates the album, The other big reason is Sandy's voice, especially in the selection of songs for this formidable effort. My favorite cut is the last one in the album: Brasil de Hoje written by both, Marcos Silva and Sandy; a perfect example of what Brazilian Jazz sounds like. Finally, I don't know if they ran a very low production batch, but after just 8 years, it seems to be out-of-print and very-hard-to-find, so grab it when you can; it's becoming a classic.

What a selection of songs on this CD! Sandy has chosen some beautiful material, and Marcos Silva has produced some terrific tracks! I don't know a word of Portuguese, but I can understand THIS music! The vocal harmonies are lush and lovely - this is a MOST musical CD!
