My over-all favorite,

This review is from: Homeopathic Medicine At Home (Mass Market Paperback)
I have been studying homeopathy for 30 years & when I do not have time to fully repertorize an illness (which is almost NEVER with anything acute these days!) this book is my first resource. It seems to cover most acute illnesses & is especially good for treating colds, flu, stings, gas, teething problems, sore throats, etc....
I would like to see a better cross-referenced Index, but the numerous charts supplied somewhat make up for this short-coming - making it pretty easy to locate the problem/illness without too much difficulty. It also contains a nice little Materia Medica in the back -- so if you can't decide between several remedies this will help narrow the choice as it gives the specifics for the remedy as opposed to the main part of the book which gives the recommended remedies for the illiness. I often back it up with "Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines" by Stephen Cummings & Dana Ullman - but if I had to choose only one book to purchase I would go with the book I am reviewing. Another small short-coming of the book is it doesn't cover CELL SALTS as completely as needed (although, to be fair, no "quick-guide" homeopathic book does - with any depth anyway). which is why I would recommend the companion book: "Natural Healing with Cell Salts" by Dr. Skye Weintraub. Personally, I have found cell salts to work extremely well in conjunction with homeopathic remedies. Even though I practice the principals of classical homeopathy (ONE remedy at a time - changing the remedy until you find the one that works, & change remedies as soon as symptoms change &/or the current remedy no longer works) I still like to combine a homeopathic remedy with a cell salt. (A good example here would be a fever with a flushed face: homeopathic remedy might be Belladonna, and add the cell salt - Ferr Phos.) Over-all I couldn't give the book 5 stars due to the inadequate Index and less-than-stellar coverage of CELL SALTS, but for my money, this is still a best-bet! If you are new to homeopathy I can not encourage you enough to pursue this wonderful means of natural healing! And if you are a Christian, I urge you NOT to get hung up on the aspect of energetic healing until you learn more about the principals. I am a Christian who have seen ignorant fellow-Christians shrink at the idea of homeopathics as if they were some kind of voodoo. This is simply a fear-driven response that hopefully will be re-evaluated. Anyone interested in pursuing the principals of healing through homeopathic medicine, more in-depth, would do well to purchase the book "The Science of Homeopathy" by George Vithoulkas and also get a Materia Medica by Boerricke and a "Repertory" by J. T. Kent. You could also call your local naturopath & ask if they offer classes. Anyone can learn homeopathy. I began when my children were born and they never had to take antibiotics more than once throughout their entire childhoods. They are now all adults who practice homeopathy with their own families, and this is the first homeopathic book I gave them as a gift when they moved into their new homes (along with a basic supply of remedies). Good luck, and God bless.

An empowering book for everyone,
This review is from: Homeopathic Medicine At Home (Mass Market Paperback)
Of all the homeopathic books written for the general public, this is one of the most useful. If you've suffered a minor injury, or come down with a cold, flu or earache, or if you are having an upset stomach, this book will quickly guide you to the correct remedy. It is easily understood by the medical layperson, and it will give you solid knowledge of how to treat yourself and others in a safe, natural way, without the risks, side-effects and costs of conventional drugs. It goes without saying that any self-help book, no matter how good, does not replace the care of a medical professional. If you have a serious or chronic condition, and you think that homeopathy can help, go see a qualified homeopathic practitioner.

Excellent home reference,

This review is from: Homeopathic Medicine At Home (Mass Market Paperback)
This is an excellent book overall and is the text for the National Center for Homeopathy's study group course. Dr. Panos gives verbose, anecdotal images of the differences between the different remedies for a given ailment, as well as good general background on homeopathy.

I am just starting out in homeopathy, so take this into account. I love this book, it has charts in it that have quick reference that lists the remedy, specific indications, general symptoms, worse from and better from categories. It is perfect for me as a beginner!

This review is from: Homeopathic Medicine at Home: Natural Remedies for Everyday Ailments and Minor Injuries (Paperback)
As the mother of two small children, I find this book quite helpful. It is a general overview of homeopathy and provides enough detail that I can handle common problems on my own. It includes sections on the following subjects:
1. What is homeopathy? 2. A homeopathic physician at work 3. Your homeopathic remedy kid 4. What to do for accidents 5. In case of emergency 6. How to prevent and treat colds, coughs and earaches 7. Remedies for stomach and bowel problems 8. A happier baby with homeopathic care 9. Your growing child 10. What homeopathy can do for women 11. Keeping your pets healthy The appendixes include the following: * Remedies and their abbreviations * Mini-repertory * Materia Medica * Pharmacies carry homeopathic remedies (this section is somewhat out of date as it does not list any online sources) Chapter 8, with its section on on teething and the remedy chamomilla alone is worth the price of the book. I was first introduced to homeopathy when my first born was teething. He had been crying and sleeping only for brief periods for days. I gave him a dose of a remedy containing chamomilla, and he immediately stopped crying and fell asleep. I was amazed! I also frequently refer to chapter 6 during cold season. The section on croup is quite good, explaining when to use each of the most commonly needed remedies. One thing I didn't like about the book is how she talks about the same subject more than once, for instance fever in 3 different chapters. In one chapter she gives the remedies for a fever and in another chapter she says just to let it run unless it gets to 105 degrees Fahrenheit or more, and if that is the case, call your doctor. Treating fevers is controversial, I admit. It is definitely the body's attempt to kill the virus. But when my baby is crying and inconsolable because of a fever, I give him the herb catnip, and he feels better within minutes. But overall, it is an easy to understand book for those of us who want to be able to treat our children ourselves with homeopathic remedies. It's a book I always want to have at home.

I was introduced to this book by a doctor friend of mine who actually went to the author as a patient years ago. Great reference book, easy layout, and good explanation of homeopathic remedies for beginners and those experienced. Goes great with Hyland and Boiron brand for my family. Hope this helps!

Helpful and comforting,
By S. Merriam "Author of You Can Build a Chicken... (Arcadia, Oklahoma) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Homeopathic Medicine At Home (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first book I bought on homeopathic medicine when I first began using it more than twelve years ago. I like the way it is written - it almost feels as though you have a kindly physician sitting across from you. That being said, my one complaint with this book is the repetories/remedies pages that are placed at the end of each chapter. I have never used these and find them a bit confusing.
If you do buy this book (and I encourage you to - it's well worth the investment) I would really encourage you to read the book through. Then you will be able to more easily find the remedies that apply to you in times of emergency. I now have several books on homeopathy on my shelves, and this is always the first one I turn to when I or a family member are sick. Well worth the investment.

Homeopathic Medicine at Home,
By Ali B (Berkshire, UK) - See all my reviews

This book is an excellent beginners First Aid book - FIRST AID being the key phrase, it will not cover deeper constitutional problems such as warts, asthma, eczema etc because these are chronic not first aid situations and need to be addressed by a professional.
The table layouts are especially helpful as quick reference and have been commented on by those I teach Homeopathic First Aid too. The Materia Medica section at the back is also well written and easy to read in a hurry. Dr Panos and Dr Heimlich's book still rates very highly on my first homeopathy book suggestion list.

This book had many remedies that are good to have on hand. Also, had a brief explanation of what Homeopathy is to better understand. Great book for a beginner.

The informational portion of this book is helpful, but I was disappointed in the appendix. There are many other references (Materia Medica, etc.) that are much easier to peruse, and you will certainly need a secondary resource for that purpose.
The author's personal experiences in the field are very interesting, so I recommend it for an overview of the subject. |
