Review

Homeopathy: Beyond Flat Earth Medicine by Timothy R. Dooley, is a gem of a book. Dooley's writing style is informal, conversational, and easy to read. Amazingly, it is mostly jargon-free with the history and philosophy woven throughout in colorful threads rather than delivered in dry, dusty chunks. The explanations are succinct and beautifully digestible. Dooley answers every question I have ever been asked about homeopathy--and many more--while describing virtually every aspect of homeopathic treatment. The chapters are sprinkled with memorable stories, anecdotes, and case histories that are invariably vivid, interesting, humourous, or entertaining--sometimes all at once. This book reminds me of my favorite teacher, who entertained and instructed in equal measure. -- Miranda Castro, FS Hom, Mothering Magazine, Summer 1997 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Dr. Dooley has the distinction of having both a naturopathic degree and medical degree. He graduated in 1978 from National College of Naturopathic Medicine (1978), one of the four accredited naturopathic medical schools in the United States. He returned in 1985 to Oregon Health Sciences University School of Medicine, and received his medical degree in 1989.

He was co-founder of Grants Pass Naturopathic Clinic in Oregon, medical director of emergency services at Del Puerto Hospital in California, and volunteered with the Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team in Mexico and India.

Dr. Dooley has been practicing homeopathy in San Diego since 1993 and has been teaching at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences since 1998.

This little book is an easy read, and readily explains in simple to understand terms how homeopathy works and why it should be the medicine of the future.

I was never seriously ill during most of my life, but a stubborn case of no-external-trigger urticaria (hives) has been plaguing me for nearly a year. I've visited one regular doctor, one osteopath, two emergency room docs, three allergists, and three acupuncturists. They were all unable to cure the hives, but the allergists finally brought my symptoms under control with a powerful hellbroth of prescription drugs:

1 Prednisone (steroid, immunosuppressant) 20mg pill in the morning
1 Tagamet (Cimetidine, H2 antihistamine) 300mg pill in the morning
1 Allegra (Fexofenadine, H1 antihistamine) 180mg pill in the morning
1 Zyrtec (Cetirizine HCl, H1 antihistamine) 10mg pill in the afternoon
1 Atarax (Hydroxyzine HCl, H1 antihistamine) 25mg pill at bedtime
3 Doxepin (antidepressant, sedative) 10mg pills at bedtime
1 Tagamet 300mg pill at bedtime
1 Prednisone 20mg pill at bedtime

Plus, I had to carry an emergency epinephrine (adrenaline) syringe everywhere, just in case my precariously-balanced immune system tipped into anaphylactic shock.

One of the allergists provided me with a light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel newsflash: "These cases usually burn themselves out in three to five years."

But if you take Prednisone for a long time, you tend to gain a lot of weight, and your immune response is slowly crippled. The allergists tried to cut down the Prednisone gradually, but my hives always returned with a vengeance. [A minor bout with urticaria is much like being flayed alive... and after experiencing several full-blown major attacks, I wouldn't wish one on my worst enemy.] I was clinically depressed, and marginally suicidal.

My doctors thought I was doing great, considering.

I have been a patient of homeopathy for the last ten years with excellent results. In talking with my friends, however, I often had trouble putting the theories into words that they could understand. This book solves that problem! It is eminently readable for the new homeopathic patient or simply the person who is curious about what homeopathy has to offer. I highly recommend it!

The author explains in plain simple English the history and usage of homeopathy. For anyone curious about homeopathy, this short book is a must. The author explains the differences between allopathic (chemical medicine) and homeopathic, he also touches upon why there is such opposition in modern medical and pharmaceutical circles regarding something so "ordinary" and inexpensive.

My homeopathist recommended reading this book before my first visit. My experience was so successful that I ordered several more books to lend to family, friends, and acquaintances who show an interest in homeopathy. This book really prepares you to get the most out of the homeopathic interview and cooperate with the healing process.

Can you treat patients with heavily diluted preparations which are thought to cause
effects similar to the symptoms presented?

You can if you believe the holistic medical science called homeopathy . . . I'm not sure
that I do, but wanting to know more about the subject, I read an informative book
called HOMEOPATHY: BEYOND FLAT EARTH MEDICINE by Dr. Timothy R. Dooley
(a family physician).

Dooley does a good job in taking some of the mystery out of the topic, presenting
some history along the way . . . he also presented several case studies, which
I found interesting, along with this recommendation:

* The best way to get results is to make homeopathy your primary form of therapy. That
is to say, homeopathy is what you think of first and pursue first in your healthcare needs.

As a medical doctor, I say with conviction that conventional medicine is what should be
used secondarily, as a backup to homeopathy, and not the other way around. A patient
should first give their system a chance to heal naturally and only resort to drug therapy
when truly necessary.

He goes on to point out:

* Patients who want results with homeopathy, or any form of therapy for that matter, need
to be committed. This means following the advice of the practitioner, scheduling follow-up
appointments as directed, and working with the practitioner when problems arise.

After reading HOMEOPATHY, I'm not quite willing to go that route with respect
to my medical treatment . . . however, I'm at least open to the possibility that
it may work for some folks--and if that's the case, I'm glad for them.
