5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, very accessible and current
I found this to be an excellent resource for basic homeopathy. It is written clearly, and is full of information, however, very easy to read. I read it in a weekend, and figured out some very beneficial remedies for myself. It includes a reference by illness, as well as a guide to some of the more common remedies. It covers common problems, as well as life-threatening...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good basic beginner's book
This book has the potential to help a lot of people understand the basics of homeopathy and to implement these basics into a person's life for small or self-limiting ailments (acute ailments). It should not be used for chronic illnesses.

This review is from: Homeopathy: An A to Z Home Handbook (Paperback)
I found this to be an excellent resource for basic homeopathy. It is written clearly, and is full of information, however, very easy to read. I read it in a weekend, and figured out some very beneficial remedies for myself. It includes a reference by illness, as well as a guide to some of the more common remedies. It covers common problems, as well as life-threatening illnesses and injuries. Also includes sections on newer, exotic and as-yet-undiscovered illnesses (such as antibiotic-resistant strains, anthrax, influenza, etc), as well as sections on simple way to make your own remedies. The history and success rate of homeopathy are very impressive... Homeopathy is also fast acting, and very inexpensive (averages around 8 cents per dose). I never knew the AMA was formed by physicians in reaction to the high success rates and low cost of homeopathy... not surprised. Anyway, I think it's an excellent book. If I were to buy one book about homeopathy, this would be a very sound choice.

This review is from: Homeopathy: An A to Z Home Handbook (Paperback)
I have purchased many herbal and homeopathic books, but this one is my new favorite. It's very easy to understand. The author explains how to choose the right remedy and gives real-life situations which is great for moms like me who's kids are constantly bumping or scraping themselves! Thank you Mr. Schmukler! You've made my job as a mom a lot easier! Arnica is a wonderful thing to know about with little ones!

This is such a well written book with lots of great information. Not only does Alan Schmukler give information for common illness, but he also goes into what to do in case there is and epidemic. As he mentions, these are strange times with diseases resisting antibiotics, terrorist attacks and so forth. I feel better prepared with this book and purchasing the remedies needed to have on hand in case something major happens and hospitals are too full or if I can't even get to a hospital... I'll know how to take care of me and my family from the simplest cold all the way to Anthrax. This is a must have book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Author does the job!, November 7, 2010
This review is from: Homeopathy: An A to Z Home Handbook (Paperback)
Great book. The author certainly does the homeopath's proper job, that is, of course, taking people's money and giving them no medical treatment.

Honest people know the truth. In a recent evidence check by the British government's science and technology committee, Paul Bennett, a professional standards director supervisor of a pharmacists' group, was asked if homeopathic medicines work. He said that there was a demand for them, but that "I have no evidence before me to suggest that they are efficacious."

So, well done author, keep taking peoples money!

3.0 out of 5 stars "D" Not for "Doctor," "C" Not for "Caution.", February 12, 2010
This review is from: Homeopathy: An A to Z Home Handbook (Paperback)
A good reference book, chock-full of useful information! However, it is the philosophy of the book that concerns me.

First of all, if a person is seriously ill or needs surgery, for the love of all that is holy, go to a DOCTOR. NO book on homeopathy should advocate using home remedies over true healthcare! It's completely irresponsible! Medicine has come a LONG way, and I'm sick of people touting their "doctors don't know anything" arguments. If doctors didn't know anything, we wouldn't have such a low infant mortality rate, or a high life expectancy in this country.

Secondly, I worry over a book that states that *all* homeopathic remedies are safe. Many homeopathic remedies can be just as dangerous as pharmaceuticals (sometimes moreso). Most of our drugs have been synthesized from plant materials. These plant products contain chemicals, like everything on Earth, and some, regardless of where they've come from (a forest or a science lab), can be harmful to humans and animals. Be discriminating and use caution.

Thirdly, I question the "history" outlined in the Introduction. Medicine made huge strides in the 1800's, but it was far from perfect. It was nothing like what we have today. Of course the mortality rates were higher! They didn't have the technology yet! Pasteur and Bernard didn't prove the germ theory until 1862! I find my trust lacking in a person who refutes the effectiveness of something *before* it was created. Somebody needs a history lesson--badly.

I'm all for inexpensive first-aid and general "wellness" care, but do some research first, and don't let a home remedy stand between you and getting the proper medical care that you or a loved one needs.
