Review
"Dr. Perko has written a thoroughly informative and easily usable text covering almost all conceivable clinical topics concerning pregnancy, labor, the post-partum period, ailments of the newborn child, and breast and nursing problems. Remedy descriptions are clear, succinct, and highly practical. The organization of the book is impeccable. Information can be easily and quickly accessed, a quality many birthing attendants will find of immense value when emergencies arise. The ample differential materia medica is organized according to remedies frequency of utility. The Table of Contents is expanded and a Quick Keynote Reference is provided for faster access to information. This book is the most thorough and usable working homeopath's reference to homeopathic obstetrics that I have seen to date. I highly recommend it to all homeopaths who maintain an obstetrics practice, or who tend to pregnant women and nursing mothers." -- George Guess, M.D., D. Ht., Journal of The American Institute of Homeopathy, Autumn 1997
"Finally a concise but comprehensive therapeutic handbook which is precisely what midwives and health care providers familiar with classical homeopathy need to help them differentiate between many choices of homeopathic medicines available to treat the many medical problems of pregnant women or their infants. This is the book midwives and those caring for pregnant women and their infants will take to the clinic, birthing room and home to help them choose the homeopathic medicine for their patients problems of pregnancy." -- Jacquelyn J. Wilson, M.D., D. Ht., Vice President, American Board of Homeotherapeutics, February 1997
"Homeopathically the text is an exceptionally comprehensive source of accurate, precise information, presented in an eminently readable manner, which firmly places it in the realms of core reading for students of homeopathy related to pregnancy and childbirth. Several appendices are included, commencing with information for experienced homeopathic midwives and practitioners and followed by advice about how to build up the remedy kit for those who are less experienced. This reinforces the book's purpose as being for both homeopathic practitioners caring for pregnant and childbearing women and for midwives and obstetricians wishing to learn more about homeopathy. Homeopathy for the Modern Pregnant Woman and Her Infant is good value, comprehensive and easily readable." -- British Homoeopathic Journal, July 1998
"Homeopathy for the Modern Pregnant Woman and Her Infant: A Therapeutic Practice Guidebook for Midwives, Physicians and Practitioners would be a helpful addition to any homeopathic midwife's library. In two chapters, case-taking hints are included prior to the differential listings. I think these areas of focus will be very helpful to the midwife . . . These two chapters, offering homeopathic relief for problems that find little help elsewhere, were my personal favorites. The thorough presentation on miscarriage, including treatment for chronic tendencies, is invaluable and will aid the midwife in focusing her attention on the most pertinent information required for successful resolution of the problem." -- Patty Brennan, Midwife, Cascade HealthCare, 1998
"Now, thanks to Sandra Perko, we have the most complete book by far on the subject of homeopathy for pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care. All homeopathic practitioners who work with pregnant women will find it indispensable. Is this just another homeopathic book that will decorate your bookcase? Definitely not! Homeopathy for the Modern Pregnant Woman and Her Infant will undoubtedly become a frequently used and well-loved book for any homeopath working with pregnant women and newborn babies. My congratulations and gratitude go to Sandra Perko for her invaluable contribution to the fields of both homeopathy and midwifery." -- Betty Idarius, L.M., C. Hom., International Foundation for Homeopathy, Resonance, September/October 1997
"Sandra Perko has produced a useful resource for people wanting to successfully employ homeopathy in the perinatal context. Perko has managed to present a comprehensive, yet user-friendly handbook. Perko refutes the common assumption that pregnancy is a disease that needs to be medically managed. Her philosophy of pregnancy and birth as a natural process that sometimes requires assistance to progress smoothly is clearly indicated throughout the text. . . . I recommend this book to all serious students of perinatal homeopathy. It is a good solid reference book." -- Susanna Shelton, BA, MDiv., ICHom., Homeopathy Today, February 1998
"Sandra Perko has written a superb practical text for the physician and the midwife. Comprehensive and thoroughly referenced, this extensive yet easily accessed book is a must for practitioners whose clients are interested in gentler, alternative ways of healing. Chapter 3 addresses morning sickness specifically. Here we begin to appreciate the precision with which the practitioner of homeopathy works. Thirty-one remedies are recommended for as many kinds of morning sickness. Chapter 5 is a detailed look at miscarriage. Clearly listed etiology and characteristics are followed by an extensive section on causes and remedies with explanations. Chapter 6 addresses serious problems in pregnancy such as, edema, toxemia, breech and gestational diabetes; it also takes a sensitive look at the history of sexual abuse as well as emotional states of pregnancy. Everything from false labor and distressing labor to nervous fathers and grandparents is addressed in the long chapter on labor." -- Midwifery Today, Autumn 1997
"The information given in this book is good, honest, straight forward homeopathy, nothing fancy or dangerous. For any situations that might arise which are inherently serious you are recommended to get immediate medical advice. Sandra knows her subject and gives us her knowledge in a very thorough and conscientious fashion. I do not know how she has made such a complicated subject look simple but she has. It has been a real pleasure to read this book and I think that were I to be asked to be present at a birth it would be worth its weight in gold. I have in my library other books about pregnancy and birth but this book seems to me to be a most comprehensive treatise on the practical use of homeopathy before, during and after childbirth. I would like to thank Sandra Perko for taking the time and effort to write this book and sincerely recommend it to those of you interested in the subject." -- Madeleine van Zwanenberg, The Journal of the Society of Homoeopaths, United Kingdom of Great Britain, No. 67 1997
"This book is written as a practical reference which has quick and easy access especially for emergency situations. It is aimed specifically at the practice of midwifery, although it will prove very helpful for any practitioner who treats pregnant women. It is arranged as a working tool for the professional - whether midwife or homeopath. It opens out flat for easy reading and also fits easily into a birthing bag. For those new to homeopathy, modern terms are used rather than traditional ones, to facilitate a clearer understanding. I enjoyed the candid explanations of each subject followed by the keynote differentials, in order of importance. I have included this book in my birth supplies, and once you have studied this book you will too. Thank you, Sandra, for your continued excellence and your enthusiasm for our profession." -- Sherry Lauer-Dress, CM, LM, New England Journal of Homeopathy, July 1997
