Homes and Gardens - this is an album that I haven't had in a long time. I missed it, too, because it changed a lot of what i thought about music. along with other sampling bands, EBM bands, and electronic acts, I found myself thrust into a new world of listening that did not belong to just one face. In fact, the bands here rarely wore expressions; I have had a lot of these bands for lifetimes, and these lifetimes have been focused solely on the music. Case in point: I went to see Hqaujobb in the Vertical Theory years and, as they came out and played, the lights were not focused on them. They found their ways to them sometimes and the stage show demanded that they appear here and there.
BUT they were a new breed of music, putting the sounds before the faces and trying to sell themselves as music.

Homes and Gardens is the one beautiful little mixture I missed as it made its way through the years. Sure, it had its time in the sun and, sure, the band went on and grew after this. Still, there were songs here that showed you just what the band would become. They did not hide their voices that much and they did not hide their thoughts that much, either; the thing they did was sample and build, make something beyond the layers of the "anti-mainstream," constructing while others focused on being o so cool.

If this is your first album, it might seem dated and you might want to try a different one first. I love the album and, years ago, you would have been wowed as well. It did age, however, and - like mot things - aging can only be reversed by looking at what made the thing you are listening to. So, go out and get some Haujobb and then walk tall, knowing you are walking on top of a graveyard this band dodged. also, check out Cleen and Cleaner because they have been lost in the side-project graveyard.
