Book Description

June 30, 2001
Innovative yet pragmatic, and focusing on lasting results rather than quick fixes, here is a unique resource with the authority and expertise of one of the world's leading interior design magazines. In exploring the keynotes of decoration and design--space and shape, lighting, color, materials and fabric--you can learn what makes an individual room work. Celebrate these contemporary interpretations of classic concepts--which are paired with illuminating explanations of how and why each look succeeds. Instead of opting for the latest (and passing) trends, you'll learn to make visual sense of your home and, because you'll really understand the rationale behind imaginative style, you'll have the confidence to experiment freely with a personal vision.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

There are about as many decorating styles as there are designers--and home magazines. This book takes the high road of instructor and teacher, although the author occasionally assumes the role of pedantic overseer. Words are his weapon; philosophical designs his metier. Much is made of abstract elements, such as rhythm, hierarchy, harmony, illusion, and the like; thank the Great Designers in Heaven that enough full-color illustrations are tangible proof of his theories. Some of the inclusions are trendy and hip; for example, the metal of radiators is lauded as one viable way to introduce drama. The author is practical in terms of rudimentary basics--including color relationships, lighting terms, and metrics of space. However, expect most to be less than inspirational--except, of course, for the photographs. Barbara Jacobs
