This wonderful resource isn't just for homeschoolers. My husband has stroke related dementia. One of his ongoing problems is listening and remembering sequences of events. Old Time Radio shows have proven to be extremely enjoyable for him---which was my original purpose. Recently his occupational therapist and I have noticed that he's able to remember the sequence of events in thirty minute shows with a high degree of accuracy. Thank you for this resource. Now I have an easy way to help my husband that's enjoyable for both of us!

I was born in the 1980s--LONG after the golden old-time radio show era had ended. But my parents introduced us to them after buying some cassette tapes first and then eventually building up the collection through trades and internet downloads. My dad now has about 40,000 shows! We listened to them through mealtimes, bedtimes, (I STILL don't go to sleep without listening to my favorite comedies like Our Miss Brooks, Ozzie and Harriet, Father Knows Best, My Favorite Husband, etc.), road trips, and any other time we had the chance. I share the fun, humor, adventure, and cleverness of these shows with anyone who is interested. (The Internet Archive is a great place to start.)

I also grew up homeschooled myself, and I'm very excited to see that the Erskines have created a book to help people bring this rich addition to their education. I think it's one of the best tools available. I hope that others reading this book will be convinced by how easy and enjoyable old-time radio shows can be. They are great for any family, homeschooled or otherwise! :D

A wonderful resource with great ideas to make listening to radio shows educational, easy, and fun! My 2 boys are very active (usually on the ceiling), so getting them to be quiet and listen to stories is very difficult. The suggestions in this book should help a lot, and make it an enjoyable adventure and escape from the daily norm! I agree with Mr. Erskine that listening is a lost art. I remember listening to records as a kid for hours on end, and escaping into all the wonderful stories. To this day I would rather listen than talk :) Audio books are great for ANYONE who needs to learn to listen and use their imagination! I love the stories that are included with this book, and can't wait to get started implementing his great ideas with my boys. Thanks again for another great resource!

This guide is written in easy to read, clear language. I wish I had read this before I stumbled across old time radio shows. We have tried them in our home but didn't stick with them much. This book has encouraged me to give them a try again to develop an important character in me and my children - the art of listening. In today's world, there are few good listeners. Everyone is so busy trying to say something. How easy it is to sit down and immerse ourselves in a good book or a lose ourselves in a tv show or movie. With tv, we kind of shut our brains off and let everyone else do the thinking for us. Radio shows - a great idea to stimulate our children's imaginations! An added bonus - there are some links included with this book for some free radio shows.

My kids often question the value of learning every little detail of history, and I tend to agree with them. Listening to audio stories takes the drudgery out of learning, and in fact even makes it fun. And I like listening even as much as the kids do. This book gives good information on how to make audio resources even more profitable and productive. The listening guides provided give good background information and questions to ask, providing guidance to help with doing that even on other stories. I did not think that I would necessarily learn something from a book like this - I understand the value of different teaching methods, but I found good and interesting information here.

We have enjoyed using audio stories and radio dramas as part of our homeschooling and family entertainment for about a year or more now. I have noticed that my children have become better listeners and (naturally) quieter during these story times. This book is short and simple, but offers helpful ideas on how to get more out of these fun, educational tools, as well as how to encourage these valuable listening skills in individuals who are less interested in the idea of listening attentively to something they can't see. Getting 5 free mp3 downloads with guides along with the book makes it a good value too.
