About the Author

Suzanne Stewart is a professional freelance writer and marketer, and the author of Homeschooling on the Cheap. She has been homeschooling her children since 2002, using mostly Charlotte Mason's methods and philosophies. She has studied Charlotte's writings, as well as others' works on Charlotte and her ways. She is currently the Charlotte Mason "expert" for the Christian Homeschoolers Taking a Stand blog. She lives just the other side of nowhere in rural WV with her 2 children, 2 dogs, 4 cats, 2 fish and a hamster. When not writing or homeschooling, she enjoys reading, playing flute and bowed psaltery, tramping across the hills and hollows of home, and practicing the arts and sciences of homemaking and motherhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be titled DIY Homeschool Curriculum. February 27, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This was such a fun read! What a comprehensive book. The whole thing was inspiring and gave me traction (and courage) to fashion my own curriculum. What it gave me the most is ability. I think that with the work she did and how thorough she was this book is worth $40 and I'm cheap.

I read the first chapter for free and liked her chatty, funny style so I bought the book.

Now, my son won't have to work from dry workbooks. Why do that when there is so much beauty in literature? There are math games and an outline of what you actually need to teach your child for them to succeed in all subjects, including the arts and things like typing. Also, she keeps the fun in school which I am a big believer in.

Even if you want to go buy a regular curriculum (you won't need to) this would beef up any education nicely. Thanks to this book, I feel like a homeschool dynamo!

This is my all time favorite homeschool book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great creative ideas!! February 8, 2011
Format:Paperback
Borrowed this from our local library near where the author lives. Great insight on some very practical, cost-effective ways to homeschool! Realized I was writing down so many good ideas from the book, that it would be easier to just buy it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic July 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Great information. This really gives a ton of fantastic ideas on how to go about structuring and planning your homeschool year. Tells you how to teach different subjects. Awesome ideas and wonderful, concrete information. I am taking notes and highlighting so many pages. It gave me great jumping off points for history, science, geography, math, etc. In addition to telling you what works, she also tells you what didn't work for her and why. Includes many ideas for logs, notebooks, lapbooks, and so on...also has an appendix with a scope and sequence section for all the topics covered...Love it!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful April 6, 2013
By RsMom
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a mom new to homeschooling I found this book very helpful. It walks you through every subject and spells out how to go about teaching it without purchasing a bunch of expensive prepackaged curriculum. I do have to mention that this book has numerous type errors looks like they missed proof reading altogether. Still this book is a great reference, worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for newbies or Veterans January 20, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have read through this book once and am now reading a second time. I am taking notes this time around. Suz brings a new light to us fellow homeschoolers. I have been HSing for 3 years and really like the CM method, but I never really knew how to get started so I have put it off. Suz shows how you can bring that factor into your school and make it your own. I love the idea of schooling on the cheap! Really, Edison didn't have all these fancy curriculum and he made it just fine! Great read!!!!
