5.0 out of 5 stars Thank goodness -- a book that answers questions!!!
Three cheers for HOMESCHOOLING FOR DUMMIES!! Every other homeschooling book I ever picked up had an agenda -- they wanted you to do things this way or that way, and preached that no other way of teaching could possibly work at all. HOMESCHOOLING FOR DUMMIES explains the pros and cons of many different teaching methods without proclaiming that any one of them is the *only*...

3.0 out of 5 stars Dummies we will remain!
This book contains significant misinformation and misrepresentations of several styles of homeschooling. If you want to learn about choices in homeschooling there are many better and far more accurate books out there including Mary Griffith's The Homeschooling Handbook and Marsha Ransom's The Complete Idiots Guide to Homeschooling. While the book has its merits, it does...

Three cheers for HOMESCHOOLING FOR DUMMIES!! Every other homeschooling book I ever picked up had an agenda -- they wanted you to do things this way or that way, and preached that no other way of teaching could possibly work at all. HOMESCHOOLING FOR DUMMIES explains the pros and cons of many different teaching methods without proclaiming that any one of them is the *only* answer. Most importantly, the author shares her experiences with things that worked and things that failed with her own kids, and how she continually reshapes her teaching approaches. It felt great to finally hear someone say "find what works for your kids and do it"!!!

Everyone either thinking about homeschooling or currently teaching at home needs a copy of this book. It's a life (and sanity) saver!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Priceless Resource, February 20, 2006

Dad of 8 "Urbo" (Worldwide - USAF) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Homeschooling For Dummies (Paperback)
When considering homeschooling as a viable educational option for our boys, we were in a fog. Homeschooling seemed like a very foreign (very weird) concept and we were hesitant to attempt due to lack of exposure to any credible information on the subject. We bought "Homeschooling for Dummies" (our first in a long line of "Dummies" books) and made the switch just 6 months later. It has everything you need in a one-stop reference that can be used to determine if homeschooling is right for your family as well as fine tune any already-homeschooling families. It breaks down everything from the slightly unusual "unschooling" and the dreaded "socialization" question to lists of books and references to use as a jumping-off point. Thinking of taking the plunge into homeschooling? This is THE book to read first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful , informative, basic, January 31, 2006

Definitely for the beginning homeschooler, this book has lots of basic info. It's a great starting place, covers a lot of ground but touches each area only lightly. Don't expect anything in depth on any particular subject, but look to this book for general info and ideas, and expect it to be a springboard for further research. Very helpful as a starter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight forward information with no agenda, June 28, 2003
This review is from: Homeschooling For Dummies (Paperback)
We have been in homeschooling since the 70's and aside from Homeschooling For Excellence written by a couple we know and respect, this is a book I would highly recommend simply because it offers valuable information and does NOT set out to convert people to homeschooling. Even bought a copy for my local library.

This book helped me to decide to homeschool 2 of my children. It offers easy-to-read complete explanations of every way to homeschool. In addition, it has many website recommendations that I keep using for every related subject you can imagine, from how to get organized to where to look for study units, to state requirements.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST homeschool overview out there, June 22, 2009

I've read a number of homeschooling books and this one is definitely the BEST overview of the subject. Kaufeld covers all the basics and also provides a number of great resources for supplemental learning such as games, toys, activities, etc. Her writing style is witty and engaging. One thing that really sets this book apart from a lot of others is that there are NO religious overtones, a very welcome attribute for me. The author does acknowledge religious homeschooling resources, but she does it with respect for all religious (or non-religious) beliefs. This should be the first book any parent reads once they begin to consider homeschooling.

This is a very informative book from a seemingly experienced homeschooling mother. Looks at ALL the ins and outs, ups and downs. I would recommend it for sure.
