This is a Christian based small book of 109 pages with nine chapters. The first two chapters are all about your child and choosing curriculum. She then jumps right into Reading Methods and Writing Strategies followed by Social Studies and Science. We don't homeschool, but we've been considering it. This book seemed reasonable (it's the last time I order a book that only has one review!) for an overview type of process.

First of all the dedication, introduction and acknowledgements are all very God-centric. I don't mind people having their own faiths, but I resent having it shoved in front of me when...

This review is from: Homeschooling with TLC in the Elementary Grades: A Practical Guide with Fun and Effective Teaching Tips (Perfect Paperback)
This is a Christian based small book of 109 pages with nine chapters. The first two chapters are all about your child and choosing curriculum. She then jumps right into Reading Methods and Writing Strategies followed by Social Studies and Science. Chapters 7 and 8 are about support and encouragement as you homeschool after which she deals with the extras such as music, foreign language, art, etc. in short snippets. Finally, the appendix is filled with a list of Newberry and Caldecott medal winning literature. I found the book quite informative and chock full of resources, ideas, strategies and methods for homeschooling. It is well written, easy to read and the cartoons throughout are good for a chuckle. I'm glad I bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Homeschooling Book!!!, October 24, 2007
This review is from: Homeschooling with TLC in the Elementary Grades: A Practical Guide with Fun and Effective Teaching Tips (Perfect Paperback)
I literally read and studied every book on homeschooling at my local library! Homeschooling with TLC is my absolute favorite! It is a one-of-a-kind treasure trove of how-to in a to-the-point format by a real professional teacher and homeschool mother. This un-intimidating read is moving, truthful, inspiring, motivational, and simply a must-read and must-own. Homeschooling with TLC is the ONLY how-to-teach namely how-to-homeschool book written for average people seeking to make lesson time inspired, effective and FUN for their children.

The seasoned and long sought-after author, Tamara L. Chilver taught in the public school system for years and has homeschooled her own three children even longer! Finally published, Mrs. T.L.Chilver Gifts us all with her ability to teach us how-to-teach our children and make it a Blast! This handy, well organized gem compiles tons of tips, games and ideas. It is a succinct listing of what works and how to make it happen in your own home! Check out her website and sign up for her weekly blogs teachingwithtlc. com She's my homeschool hero and mentor and more importantly my children's ...they can't get enough of her ideas! She will be yours too...Read it to believe it!

Finding the path to homeschooling with a bonafide expert holding your hand takes all of the trepidation and fears away. While staying on course to a stimulating and thrilling homeschool experience for the whole family is made easy in these few pages! No longer must homeschool teachers prepare boring tedious lessons and children be plagued by chapters of activity books. No longer must we read thick, heavy, wordy texts by inept authors on the subject nearest and dearest to our hearts and calling. It's simply Awesome to have the benefit of a "real" teacher giving encouragement and practical tips on the matter of superiorly educating our children at home.

You'll want to share Homeschooling with TLC with everyone. My copy has had to be replaced tens of times so I advise you to buy several copies now to share with all of your homeschooling friends, relatives, homeschooling groups and to anyone you know who is considering homeschooling. As a busy mom of 2 school-aged kids, a toddler and an infant, I don't have much time for research or lengthy lesson plans for homeschooling. This book is filled with practical, simple, realistic ideas for homeschooling your elementary aged kids and making it fun for both them and you! I don't read books on homeschooling as I usually find them discouraging and exhausting, but at the enthusiastic recommendation of a friend I bought this one. It was a fast, easy read and it energized me and gave me new inspiration for teaching my kids! It's broken down by subject so it will be easy to use as a reference when I need it. My excitement after reading this book has spilled over onto my kids and they can't wait to start school and do some of the things that I have planned for this year!

For anyone homeschooling and in need of encouragement or for someone considering homeschooling...This is your answer. I gained a lot from reading this even though we have been homeschooling for 7 years. I think this is a great book to have on your book shelf and comes in handy when a family starts asking you about homeschool...Just hand them this! :)

We don't homeschool, but we've been considering it. This book seemed reasonable (it's the last time I order a book that only has one review!) for an overview type of process.

First of all the dedication, introduction and acknowledgements are all very God-centric. I don't mind people having their own faiths, but I resent having it shoved in front of me when I buy a book. I notice that many homeschool websites also talk about God and Christianity. Is there some kind of link between Christianity and homeschooling? All the homeschool families I know are also rabid religious people. I guess it's not for us, then.

But also, in the first chapter (broken down into "things you need to know before starting") the author tells of 3-4 other books the homeschool parent needs to get! Why didn't she just make this slender book a bit thicker and incorporate that information herself? Yes, I know you can't jump into something as demanding as homeschooling on the advice of just one book, but...meh. It's a bit irritating. More like a book shopping list than a book.

So, I gave this a 3-star review, because I didn't get past chapter 1. It was just too upsetting. Perhaps this is a good book if you don't mind all the Christian brainwashing and if you have lots of money to spend on more books.

PS - there's a quote from Thomas Kinkade in here, and I don't like him either!
