Homespun Bride is about a young woman, Lottie O'Malley, who was raised in an orphanage. She comes west to Mill Creek, Missouri as a "mail-order bride" with two offers of marriage: one from the local parson and a back up offer from a local widowed farmer, James Tillman. When she arrives in Missouri she is told that the parson is "out of town" so some kind soul takes her to James Tillman's farm. Upon arriving at the farm, she learns he has just been killed in a farm accident. At the farm, needing care and love, are James's two adorable young children, Thomas and Sissy. James's grieving younger brother, John Tillman, is glad to have Lottie's help in caring for the children. As with all of Miss Davidson's books that I've read so far, the couple marries early in the book and disover the joy of love *after* the wedding. John and Lottie are both quick-witted and Miss Davidson spins a delightful tale of pioneer life with multi-faceted characters that are a joy to get to know. Lottie and I both fell in love with John, Thomas, and Sissy and you will too!

So refreshing - an author who puts marriage before sex!
Despite the strange way of meeting each other, Lottie O'Malley and John Tillman struggle to meets the needs of the children and find ultimate happiness.

James's gruff, grieving younger brother, John was no match for orphan raised 19 year old Lottie. Even though he didn't know what hit him, John was witness to the tender, sympathetic manner Lottie displayed to James's raggamuffin youngsters, little Sissy and 7 year old Thomas.

Lottie made instant connection with the youngsters who had been very politely raise and they endeared themselves and crept into Lottie's heart.

Although Lottie felt grievously put upon, with the preacher doing a disappearing act upon her arrival, and John still enamoured with his vague dreams of Sarah, James's wife, now dead 6 months, they would marry to care for the children. Best decision they ever made.

We soon learn of the ill-fated romance of Genevieve, the store keepers beautiful daughter and Reverand Stephen Bush. Probably his reason for disappearing.

And then Sarah's parents appear, wanting to take the children back to St. Louis with them. Oh, what heartache! I had to grin as I found out that the children politely ran off. Ah, but what suffering Lottie went through with her accident.

But Love was the great result. Lottie learned to accept help and John learned the depth of love and they fast formed a family.
