My favorite,
By
This review is from: Homestead (Paperback)
This was my favorite of Jane's many books. Jane's tale held me spellbound from beginning to end. I could hardly believe how much she and her husband lived through in order to establish a home in a very difficult environment. I felt like I lived the entire ordeal with them. Very worthwhile reading.

Homestead by Jane Kirkpatrick,
By Gabby (Washougal, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Homestead (Paperback)
This is truly a "can't put it down" book. Jane's own story is deeply inspiring to anyone facing his or her own challenges. She writes with great humor and a deep faith in the power of the Almighty. Throughout the whole book the reader finds herself laughing and crying with Jane and cheering her on. Her descriptions of events are so vivid that the reader feels like it is taking place right here, right now. Jane has captured the spirit of the pioneer woman that she could have been if she had lived 100 years earlier.

Read along for the 'Journey',
By
This review is from: Homestead (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading this book so much. It was a journey that Mrs Kirkpatrick allowed us to go on with her. It was so much fun to read. I have always wondered why the pioneers of the 1800's would leave thier homes and family to go so far and into the unknown. I have come to learn that maybe it wasn't where they were going, but it was the journey of going somewhere new and living on faith. She will keep you laughing and entertained. I can still see her looking down to examine her nails, and Jerry must be much like Job with his patience and wisdom. If you are going to a place like that you definitly want a man like him along.

The joy of returning to my roots, in the Great West,
By A Customer
This review is from: Homestead (Paperback)
Having thought many times about chucking it all and returning to Oregon, to the great high desert country and beautiful wild rivers and canyons, this was well worth the price of admission and a joy to read. Humorous, descriptive, so much so that I laughed hard, could see the blueness of the sky, and could smell the pines on the Northernmost hills at Warm Springs. I have seen the wild painted ponies and once seen, with the snow capped Cascades behind, changes you forever. I thank Jane Kirkpatrick for writing this book and I am encourgaged by the spirit of her words and the Spirit in her writing. The first two novels were captivating, so true to the landscape, the people, and it hasn't changed all that much in the 120 years since, that one can easily hike the road she writes of and hear the falls and know this is a special place. Now, how to keep these places off the map!

This was the first book of Jane's that I read. It amazed me how much she did and survived to tell about it, sometimes in a funny way. It is a great way to get to know Jane personally.

This book changed my life!,

This review is from: Homestead (Paperback)
I love this woman! She is a wonderful writer and her story inspired me to look at life and realize how wonderful it is. I am from Oregon and recently moved to Dallas, TX. Ever since, I have been terribly homesick. If you've been to Texas, you understand the culture shock. Her story was so great and it made me realize that I am so lucky to be from such a beautiful part of the country. Not only did I love this book, her other five are just as good. She is definitely one of the best writers I've come across in a long time.

Wonderful!,

I read this book about a year ago, and still think about it. The struggles and determination to make this piece of barren land into a homestead was amazing! I find myself wishing there was a Homestead II just so I could know what is going on out there on the John Day River!

Like an old friend...,

I have read 9 of Jane's books and after reading Homestead, I realized that Jane puts a lot of herself into each of her female characters. This was such an intimate look into her feelings and experiences, I felt like we were old friends.
