5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful images, delicious recipes, June 13, 2011

This review is from: Homestyle Pies and Tarts (Homestyle) (Paperback)
I received this book as a gift, and I love it. I often thumb through my recipe books to get inspired, and the images in this one stop me in my tracks every time. The pies/tarts/quiches/strudels are gorgeous, and they have inspired me to make my food much more artful. The end result is very sophisticated, even though the recipes are not terribly complex.

The contents of the book are as follows:
- Savory Pies (~50 recipes)
- Savory Tarts (~25 recipes)
- Quiches (~25 recipes)
- Sweet pies (~25 recipes)
- Sweet tarts (~20 recipes)

I have not yet tried a wide variety of the recipes in the book, but the ones that I did try were fairly straight-forward and easy to follow, and they produced nice results. I am an intermediate cook -- past beginner, but definitely not too advanced. The recipes in this book seem at my level, and perhaps some a little challenging (mostly due to the number of steps involved rather than the technique). The book does offer a fair amount of explanation in the directions, along with photographs of some of the steps. Most of the ingredients are very common, with the occasional exception of rabbit, marzipan, almond liqueur, and a few other items I don't typically keep in my pantry.

The recipes draw heavily from French, British, and Italian cuisine (e.g., Welsh lamb pie, French shallot tatin, Italian summer tart.) Still, most recipes are very accessible and produce stunning results!
