4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration and hard work
Has it really been 13 years since Mary Chapin Carpenter first cast her magic spell on me? When I explore my music collection, most often my favorites are artists' first releases. Hometown Girl included. There are several reasons for this phenomenon. First releases are culled from years of work. Usually the artist (and the record company of course) selects his best...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good debut, sign of things to come
Hometown Girl, haunting and evocative, is an excellent debut album. While not her strongest work, still it has a lot to offer. Especially evocative are Other Streets And Other Towns and Family Hands, my favorite off the album. "Raised by the women who are stronger than you know/A patchwork quilt of memory only women could have sewn/The threads were stitched by...

Has it really been 13 years since Mary Chapin Carpenter first cast her magic spell on me? When I explore my music collection, most often my favorites are artists' first releases. Hometown Girl included. There are several reasons for this phenomenon. First releases are culled from years of work. Usually the artist (and the record company of course) selects his best material - the songs that worked well in school auditoriums and small venues. Second, the artist is hungry for a wider audience, but also anxious of failure. It's sink or swim. And lastly, first releases don't merit a million dollar production with 50-member coral groups and a full symphony orchestra.

Hometown Girl wins my approval for all the previous reasons. The source of `A Lot Like Me' is a partnership with other musicians paying their dues in the small venues. There's fear of failure in `Hometown Girl,' but also fear of success. And I'm sure `A Road Is Just A Road' got the two-shades-to-the-wind bar crowd up from the tables and doing to two-step. Hometown Girl features no choral arrangement or symphony orchestra, just Mary Chapin Carpenter with a small back-up band. The result of Mary Chapin Carpenter's inspiration and hard work is irresistible.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Roots of Mary-Chapin Carpenter, January 25, 2002
By

This review is from: Hometown Girl (Audio CD)
"Hometown Girl" is an album which wasn't released by Columbia Records as much as it just escaped. Mary-Chapin was a virtual unknown outside of the Washington, D.C. beltway in 1987, and "Hometown Girl" received next to no publicity at the time of its first appearance. It remains as one of my favorite recordings by her, and "Just Because" is a simply beautiful song. The supporting musicians on this album are amazing -- especially Mark O'Connor and Tony Rice. If you enjoy the simplicity and beauty of Mary-Chapin Carpenter's music and lyrics, you will not be disappointed by this recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars For thoughtful folk-oriented listeners, June 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hometown Girl (Audio CD)
I own a few hundred CDs and get tired of most after listening repeatedly. I've never gotten tired of this one and I've listened to it more than any other. It's more thoughtful than her other CDs, slower, and simply beautiful. In my (folk fan) view, this is her very best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carpenter's Early Folk Album, February 21, 2006
This review is from: Hometown Girl (Audio CD)
Not the country most people expect from Mary chapin Carpenter. This album is full of folk (or at least folk-style) music from one of the best female artists of the 90s. Don't let the genre turn you away. This is the same high quality music you've come to expect from Carpenter. I'd rate it A++!

5.0 out of 5 stars where it all began...., March 31, 1999

alright...let's start off by stating the obvious...mary chapin carpener is the most brilliant songwriter alive today! this is an undeniable fact, and although "stones in the road" is her best example of that fact, this, her debut album, is a great place to see where it all began.not only does she bring brilliance to her own tracks, but also pays respect to others, as with her cover version of tom waite's brilliant "downtown train". it's tremendous to have this "record" of her past and to see how her talent developed over the years. her youth adds charm to this endevour, while experience adds bite to her more current projects. every album a masterpiece in their own "write", but even shakespeare had his debut, and this, chapin's first chapter, truly hints at the brilliance to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars CD evokes the atmosphere of growing up in Princeton, NJ, August 5, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hometown Girl (Audio CD)
Chapin and I grew up in the same home town, Princeton, NJ. Although I am older than she is and only know her through her music, I feel as if this CD was written for me. "Hometown Girl", "A Lot like Me" and "Other Streets and Other Towns" are a chronicle of my own life and loves. I always listen to this anytime I am happy or depressed, it always brings back memories, both sad and happy, and makes me feel better. Princeton is an extremely affluent area and I did not fit into this, but this CD has helped me heal some of the bad times I had growing up. I have seen Chapin in concert three times, she puts on a wonderful show.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST SINGER-SONGWRITER!!!, April 19, 2004

I own all of Mary's albums and can't wait to receive her new one "Between here and now" when it is released next week. I had not listened to "Hometown Girl", her debut, for some time and after having played it last night was taken aback again at how brilliant and touching Mary's lyrics and melodies are. Mary is an incredible artist and this is clearly evidenced in this, her debut. My particular favourite track is "Just Because"...It is just so moving. I have been fortunate to see Mary in concert in the UK and can't wait to see her again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Debut Album, December 7, 2001

This early work by Mary Chapin shows off her writing strengths. Her voice is at its most eager and vulnerable, and some of the writing remains, even after more than a decade, to be among the strongest she's delivered. I appreciate the honesty and simplicity of the studio production: no flourishes, no tacked on instruments, simple harmonies. I own much of her later recordings, and still LOVE to listen to this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Her first and her best, November 27, 1999
This review is from: Hometown Girl (Audio CD)
I love all of Chapin's work. She is one of the most literate songwriters out there. The lyrics of "Just Because" are meaningful to anyone who has ever cared about another person, whether a partner, friend or someone who passed briefly through his/her life. I love every song on this album. Each one has meaning and depth and soul. It is one of those rare CD's that you never get tired of. Having been the first CD, this one may have never been a chart topper, but I urge everyone who loves Chapin's work to buy it. I am sure that they too will add it to their list of favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Because, February 5, 2010

This review is from: Hometown Girl (Audio CD)
I first heard "Just Because" when I came to Los Angeles in early 1989 and listened to KTWV (the Wave) when it played "new age" type music (before it became the slick, "smooth jazz" wallpaper outlet it has been for the last 15 years). I became a Mary-Chapin Carpenter fan at that time and have remained so all these years.

I have enjoyed all of her albums, some more than others. But this album "Hometown Girl" still remains my favorite. I don't think there's a bad song on the album. My favorite? Hard to choose because they're all so good. If you have just recently become a Mary-Chapin fan, don't miss this one. It's the mother lode. But that's just one guy's opinion.
