Grey wrote songs throughout her adolescence and early adulthood, and sang in several bands along the way. Significantly, she also pursued a career in stand-up comedy. Her act complete with dead-on voice impersonations prompted a friend to suggest that De Lisle audition for voice-overs. The result led Grey toward her current status as one of the most respected voice actresses in television and films. Her work can be seen and heard on many of the top-rated children's shows for networks like Nickelodeon and The Cartoon Network, including Rugrats, Powerpuff Girls, Scooby Doo, and The Flintstones.
True to her roots, De Lisle has drawn upon the depth and honesty of classic country music as her most substantial musical influence. Much of the making of Homewrecker from the conciseness of the album's 10-song length to the spare elegance of the album cover has been carefully designed to recall the vintage '60s country albums that are prized by De Lisle. But Grey doesn't view the record as "retro" in the least. "We definitely wanted to acknowledge the influence of those great albums. But my favorite artists have a wide range of styles, which made me want to showcase some other influences."
In an era in which irony and emotional detachment are de rigeur, Grey De Lisle's unique artistry singing, songwriting, and performing is passionate, sincere, and utterly timeless.
Homewrecker features a stellar cast of musicians selected by Etzioni and De Lisle, including pedal steel virtuoso Greg Leisz (k.d. lang, Sheryl Crow), keyboardists Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) and Rami Jaffee (Wallflowers), and noted string arranger Jerry Yester (Tom Waits, Tim Buckley). Another member of De Lisle's "family," Murry Hammond, figures prominently on Homewrecker the bassist for alt.country heroes Old 97's is also De Lisle's husband. The two collaborated for one of the album's most affecting moments, the haunting duet "Showgirl (I'm Sorry)."

This review is from: Homewrecker (Audio CD)
If you are looking for a true country sound, this is it. Grey De Lisle is a talent like so very few. With a voice equal to Carlene Carter and a sound rooted in tradition, you would never guess that this was the woman behind the voices of Vicki on Fairly Oddparents, Frankie on Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and Mandy on the Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy. But that only adds to the fun of it. I not only love good music, which Ms. De Lisle more than provides, but I am also a cartoon buff. I do not own this album yet, but it will very soon be in my collection, as will the rest of her CDs. If you love great country music, buy everything Grey De Lisle has available.
