Editorial Reviews

Review

“This necessary, powerful, oblique, and misshapen book is part of a grand statement of the sociological imagination. . . . Bourdieu may now be handed the mantle of first maître à penser in Paris.”—Times Literary Supplement

This review is from: Homo Academicus (Paperback)
Not an easy book, but if you are faculty or a graduate student you will find this book fascinating. Bourdieu's framework for understanding how seemingly irrational behavior makes sense to the natives is applied to a subject he knows well, French intellectuals. The result is a nice demonstration of his theoretical approach complimented by a sometimes biting insight into what motivated professional academics.

In choosing to study the social world in which we are involved, we are obliged to confront, in dramatized form as it were, a certain number of fundamental epistemological problems, all related to the question of the difference between practical knowledge and scholarly knowledge, and particularly to the special difficulties involved first in breaking with inside experience and then in reconstituting the knowledge which has been obtained by means of this break. Read the first page
