Editorial Reviews

Review

Bayer's job in his tight, extraordinary packed bullet of a book is a particular one: to tell us what was at stake when the A.P.A. erased homosexuality from its list of mental diseases in 1973.... Bayer's book takes us behind the scenes of this uneasy linguistic victory in a way we have never been taken before. -- The Nation

5.0 out of 5 stars How homosexuality was cured!, September 30, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Homosexuality and American Psychiatry (Paperback)
This is an important book for anyone interested in how the diagnosis of homosexuality was dropped by the American Psychiatric Association in 1993. The author of this book gives a reasonable history of the events leading up to that decision and through interviews with psychiatrists who both supported and opposed the decision, illustrates the political nature of using medical diagnoses to determine what constitutes normal and abnormal behavior.
