4.0 out of 5 stars No problems here
I purchased this program on the recommendation of a Fry's Electronics clerk and love it. I have done numerous home VHS tapes to DVD. It is simple to use and I am very pleased with the quality it puts out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money
Video quality is the poorest I've ever seen. Vhs copies of copies of copies are better. No audio during capture process. Editing is too complicated especially without a manual. The burning process doesn't work at all. Tech support can't even determine what thier own error codes mean. I broke my own first rule: NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM A COMPANY WITHOUT A PHONE NUMBER. 1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Program, December 29, 2006

Wow, I have used a lot of different software programs for editing, copying etc. and Honestech VHS to DVD 2.0 Deluxe is the WORST. There are so many limitations, I am not sure where to begin. First off, you have to have your tape already set up exactly where you want to begin copying. There is no option to rewind or fast forward. Not a major issue, but it does complicate things. I agree with the other reviewers comment on the quality, it is very very poor. Honestly, if you can purchase a dvd camcorder, invest the money towards that and record everything straight to dvd. In recording two separate videos, this program crashed my computer numerous times. I am running a Pentium IV, 2.8 ghz and this program killed my computer. There are so many bugs in it, I would bet that not even Honestech VHS to DVD 25.0 Deluxe would have the kinks worked out. My recommendation to all is avoid this program completely. It is not worth the money at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work & crashes your computer too, January 1, 2007
This review is from: Honestech VHS to DVD 2.0 Deluxe [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
when i installed the software, it gives u a warning that it has it hasn't been approved by MSoft as being compatible to Windows XP. However, the instructions tell you to go ahead anyway, which I did. The result: my computer crashed and I cannot even uninstall the USB 2.0 VIDBOX software, which just wasted 1.0 MB space in my computer hard drive. This software does not work!!! Since I got it from Costco, at least I could return it and get my money back. Had I bought it from a different store, my $50+ would have been wasted. Do not buy this product. You might crash your computer too!!! I wanted to give this a zero star but the lowest choice is 1.

1.0 out of 5 stars Computer Lock Up!, January 4, 2008
This review is from: Honestech VHS to DVD 2.0 Deluxe [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
I bought "VHS To DVD" ver. 3.0 at BJs. After I got home, I read the bad reviews but loaded it in hoping I would have no problems. BAD IDEA! First of all, the capture device was different from the unit that was shown in the "Quick Guide" A newer, sleeker box with slightly different type connections. No published full User Guide or Manual. But, a newer Guide was in the disc as a .pdf.

After installing the program, I started to transfer a VHS tape using Easy Wizard Mode. All seemed well with the first transfer but then I noticed the mouse starting to hesitate and finally the computer locked up totally. I had to hold the power button in on my computer to restart. Then after Windows came back up, my video screen resolution was greatly reduced and all the icons etc. were huge. I had to restart in Safe Mode and uninstall the Honestech program. Then my sound was all screwed up and I had to reinstall my sound card driver. During this mess, I was taken to their site which had a "patch" to supposedly repair these problems but to no avail.

HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS: After I uninstalled the program and repaired my computer to normal, I remembered Windows has a program called "Windows Movie Maker." (C:\Programs\Movie Maker)I plugged the video capture device that came with the VHS To DVD package using the supplied UBS cable. I then booted up Movie Maker, clicked on "Video Capture Device" on their menu and it recognized the unit immediately. Guess what: The Windows program is simple to use and you can send the captured video right to any file you choose and edit them later, if desired. Or just burn them on a DVD. Simple.

So the bottom line is: DON'T WASTE MONEY ON THIS PROGRAM! But, if you already did, use there device and try out the Windows Movie Maker. I doing right now. And when I'm done, I am going to return this piece of junk to BJs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work, January 14, 2007
This review is from: Honestech VHS to DVD 2.0 Deluxe [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
I bought this program despite the bad reviews and ended up returning it. The software would not record because it said the VHS tapes were copywrited, but yet they were old family events! The advanced mode didn't work for me at all, I kept getting an error message.

The one guy that gave this a positive review is from Austin, TX, strangely where this company is based. Also, the only other product he reviewed was also made by this company....hmmmm. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Software for the basic user, May 16, 2007
This review is from: Honestech VHS to DVD 2.0 Deluxe [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
I purchased this product at Costco and was able to transfer both my vhs movie tapes and my HI8 camcorder tapes to it. Initially I had the copyright error pop up on my family tapes, but I notified their tech dept and I received a patch for the error message. It worked correctly and I continued with my tape to dvd transfer. I noticed that if I tried certain transfered dvds on an older model dvd player, I would not receive sound, but the dvd would work on an updated newer model of a dvd player. I have no complaints, since all the vcr and hi8 movies are on dvd now. The color transfer appears to be the same as to what the initial tape looked like.

Product not at all what it appears to be for reasons already expressed by the other 1 star reviews. Honest tech, huh? Hopefully they're honest enough to give me my money back!

1.0 out of 5 stars Deserves no stars - Avoid, June 27, 2006
Bought this a few weeks ago and have been wrestling with it ever since, simply trying to convert some VHS home movies to DVD's.

For days I sat at the computer, step-by-stepping through the poorly written manual. Three separate times I did everything it asked for and patiently waited 4 hours for the program to write my DVD without getting any acceptable results.

I'm computer literate and expect a learning curve when I try out new stuff, but this has got to be the most poorly documented and frustrating software I've ever encountered.

This review is from: Honestech VHS to DVD 2.0 Deluxe [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
This review is for Honestech VHS to DVD 3.0 Deluxe, the newer version. I tried to install it on four computers and none of them worked. Moreover, when installing this version, a warning message pops up saying it did not pass the windows logo test!

With the iron-clad proof, the store gave me a full refund. But my wasted time will never return!
