5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most satisfying ska records of the mid 90s.
There were a ton of ska/punk acts in the mid 90s that never really stood out from the bunch, or provided many memorable records. "Honey I'm Homely" is probably one of the best ska records ever recorded.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but not as good as earlier stuff
I am happy I got this album, but the one thing that totally bugs me are the guitar riffs which are kind of on the cheesy side and take a lot away from the energy of the music. Still, the always incredible vocals of Elyse and Karina more than make up for the uninspired rhythm section and ultimately make this album a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most satisfying ska records of the mid 90s., September 16, 2004
This review is from: Honey I'm Homely (Audio CD)
There were a ton of ska/punk acts in the mid 90s that never really stood out from the bunch, or provided many memorable records. "Honey I'm Homely" is probably one of the best ska records ever recorded.

Everyone in the band belts out tightly constructed power-pop-ska, that backs the vocals beautifully. Vocals come first on this amazing record, combining the captivating vocals of Elise Rogers and Karina Denike. These two singers harmonize so beautifully, weaving in and out of the rhythm, rocking out extremely addictive choruses.

It's hard to pick a favorite, since the album works so well as a whole. Some of the standout tracks would include "Lost Again," "All Mine," "Elvis & Me," and "Last Laugh". Probably my favorite track here would be "The Truth About Me". It has the most addictive chorus on the album: hey - I love to hear myself talk, I'm my own favorite audience, 'cause I'm the funniest person I know, if you were me I'm sure you'd agree. All the lyrics presented here will make you smile from the pure wittiness of them.

If you are tired of ska/punk bands that all sound the same. Pick up "Honey I'm Homely"; it's a brilliantly refreshing record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Im hooked, January 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Honey I'm Homely (Audio CD)
I reviewed this CD as a 4 star CD earlier.... but now Ive changed my mind. Its so even, so great. I love practically each and every song, cept Next to you and Stand by perhaps, that are great songs but not in class with the rest of the CD. Without exaggerating: the best album I have ever heard. Seeing from its high quality songs. Love the bass, the guitars, the drums and the vocals.... the intro on Over again is just yummy. One small complain: the refrain on some songs (over again, Lost again) are weaker then the verse... but who cares? The best album I have. And I have a lot of CDs. Wanna give it more then just 5 stars.... recentlt got Lockjaw, and first impression is that it is just as good.... DHC is my fave band, no doubt about that. Speaking of No Doubt, they are nothing compared to DHC. In short: they rule.

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU NEEEEEED this album (and all other DHC albums), January 8, 2002

i just discovered the dance hall crashers a few months ago...i bought their cd from recomendations made on this site--i hadn't heard anything by them before but i took a chance and bought this cd. within like a month i had ALL their cds and they are now my all time favorite band (as the owner of 400+ cds it really takes somethin for me to put it at the top of the list--especially so quickly) i cant begin to tell you how awesome this band is! they have the coolest lyrics and all their songs are uniquely different--(i hate when you get a cd and its good...but all the songs sound pretty much the same--not an issue with the DHC)

my fave songs: Mr. Blue, All Mine, Salted, Cold Shower.....aww forget it -- i love them all!

how bout a sample of the cool lyrics?
-"oh quit your whinin', it's so borin, play the victim, and keep my yawnin...."-Mr. Blue--great for if you're sick of listening to people complain

-"i wish i could tell you what i want from you, i would if i knew"-Cold Shower--great if you want somebody but you dont but you do and they want you but they dont yet they do....

-"i love to hear myself talk, im my own favorite audience, cuz im the funniest person i know...if you were me im sure youd agree"-The Truth About Me--heh heh...just a cool song

-"you're the one i've been waitin on, what took you, what took you so long, i'd just about givin up on this, oh yeah, oh yeah don't you wish, that you could go and forget about me, but that'd but that'd be too easy, better be ready to be only mine.."-All Mine--awesome song

i dont know why i chose those lyrics--just a tiny sample. dont think anymore just buy this--promise--its GREAT STUFF.

5.0 out of 5 stars DHC is the greatest skunk band around!, June 26, 2003
This review is from: Honey I'm Homely (Audio CD)
The moment you hear the two flawless voice of Elyse and Karina in "Lost again" you get the sense that you made a smart choice by purchasing this Cd. DHC has let the horn section go in this Cd but they still know how to get their fans skank'n!! With songs like "Whiskey and Gin" and "Mr. blue" you will find yourself tapp'n the beats and rock'n out. This is a little more on the punk side but still has those happy ska moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, March 28, 2002

This is the best DHC album ever, maybe the best album period (behind Tragic Kingdom). Every song is great, my favortie is Elvis and Me, but I also like Big Mouth, about annoying interviewers. Here's a lyric sample:
"I don't care what you want me to say/ You're gonna write what you want to anyway/Why are you wastin' time on me/ Just write what you want me to be/ Cause I don't care what you want me to say/ It's the same old story/ Who's gonna care anyway/ Promise me you won't ask about/ Being a girl in the rock world."
As I said, Awesome!

DHC have a gift for producing tunes that aren't the sloppy silliness that makes up most of Ska. They are rather mature in their ability to compose melodies that stick with you, and beats that knock you upside the head. The female duet is ear candy. The lyrics have a "Will Rodgers" type of wit about them that could embarrass any Compton rapper. My favorite track is "Elvis and Me."

5.0 out of 5 stars you like bad music?, August 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Honey I'm Homely (Audio CD)
then don't buy this cd! this cd is as good as it gets. Honey, I'm Homely goes above and beyond the 5 measly stars i rated it. i love every track on the cd, and personally think this is dhc's best album. although this one lacks the horns and such from The Old Record, the girls make up for it with their fantastic vocals. karina and elyse harmonize exceptionally well and makes all the songs come together perfectly. It has a great blend of slow songs (last laugh, next to you...) and faster, catchy tunes (lost again, all mine, over again...). there's such a variety in the songs that you can listen to the cd continuously without getting tired of it. there is no such thing as "over-playing" dhc, especially this cd. the songs are full of energy and make you feel bubbly all over. please buy this cd! support dhc! even my dog likes it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have CD, May 19, 2008
This review is from: Honey I'm Homely (Audio CD)
I love this CD. It is probably my favorite to play in the car. If you like Ska you will love it. Even if you don't listen to ska but like up beat music you will more likely than not like it. I have had this CD for more than 10 years and I never get tired of it.
