Biography

She grew up listening to '70s soul and '80s hip-hop, but Erykah Badu drew more comparisons to Billie

Holiday upon her breakout in 1997, after the release of her first album, Baduizm. The grooves and production on the album are bass-heavy R&B, but Badu's languorous, occasionally tortured vocals and delicate phrasing immediately removed her from the legion of cookie-cutter ... Personally, Erykah Badu has always been a little too weird for me. However, I give credit where its due. I enjoyed "Bag Lady," and a handful of other tunes, but I'm not a fan of hers.

That said, I LOVE this song "Honey." The tune's lovely midtempo instrumentals fits Badu's rather unconventional nasal voice to where it all works well. She also adds come clever tounge-twisty lyrics here in there. On the whole, the tune makes you want to run to the dancefloor and throw your hands in the air if you hear it in a public place. Also, the video of the song is very clever (it shows Erykah in a record store imagining herself on the cover of some famous and iconic albums) and adds to the appeal. Overall one of her best pieces of work and a bright spot in today's otherwise barren climate of Soul music.

Just wanted to say that those hearing 'Honey' and expecting an album with a fundamental Badu-ish sound should be wary that this album leans heavily toward the soul side of Erykah's musical repertoire.

It's an amazing album, easily a 4 star, but with fewer immediately memorable songs, with the obvious exception of 'The Healer' and 'Honey'.

Erykah explores new vocal sounds, adding to an already enormous array of genres and tones that she has shown a mastery of over her comparitivly brief career. (when considering the long careers of some of the divas that she will most certainly be compared to posthumously)

If this album were equivalent to Baduizm or Mama's Gun it would warrant a 5 star rating. Seeing as how it is just barely under their caliber but is still an amazing effort by Erykah Badu with a couple radio gems and a large group of soul grounded hip hop Badulicious tracks.

Oh, and the Georgia Anne Muldrow track is a pairing I've waited for for quite some time. Divine!

I just happened to see the video for this song about 10 minutes ago and I love it. 9th Wonder offers up one of his best beats in a while and Erykah, well, she's just Erykah. If you know the track record of Erykah and 9th, then there's really not much else left to be said.

Check for the album on the 26th...

Peace.
