"Honey, I Want to Start My Own Business shows you that it is possible to have a joyful, fulfilling marriage and a thriving business at the same time. Place this book next to your bed or on your desk, and refer to it often throughout your journey together as an entrepreneurial couple." -- from the foreword by John Gray, Ph.D., author of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus and Mars and Venus in the Bedroom "Entrepreneurial couples face unique challenges in keeping the romance alive. Azriela Jaffe understands and explores this challenge in a stimulating and insightful manner that will help couples in practical ways." -- Gregory J. P. Godek, author of 1,001 Ways to Be Romantic "A new and timely focus to what is now becoming a very strong trend -- the entrepreneurial movement. I just wish I had the book in hand to give to several clients and to my daughter and husband! ...It will be a valuable resource for a fast-growing market -- a winner indeed!" -- Victoria Felton-Collins, Ph.D., CFP, Keller Coad & Collins Investment Counsel, Inc.; author of Couples and Money When a couple decides that one or both partners will jump headlong into their very own business, they fantasize about financial independence, freedom from the nine-to-five grind and a chance to follow their dreams. Then reality hits, impacting the whole family. How can loving partners reap the benefits of entrepreneurship without sacrificing their intimacy, their future together or their family's well-being? Honey, I Want to Start My Own Business is every couple's essential guide to getting through the emotional and interpersonal as well as the financial challenges of an entrepreneurial venture. Azriela Jaffe knows firsthand how desperate self-employed couples are for advice on communicating with and supporting each other while starting a business. In her remarkably candid book, she gets up-close and personal with more than 130 entrepreneurial couples who share their most illuminating triumphs and painful defeats in a variety of industries across the country. Her extensive research reveals that business and relationship success require solid commitment, thorough preparation, skillful communication and the ability to keep perspective and a sense of humor. Each chapter is packed with unique tools, tips, exercises, creative ideas, testimonials and other resources. Honey, I Want to Start My Own Business speaks to would-be business owners as well as to their spouses, lovers and life mates, describing the many options available to them and stressing the need for a complete family strategy, not just a business plan. Together, couples can discover what works, what doesn't, and where to draw the line between the bedroom and the balance sheet.

Amazon.com Review

If there's one thing harder than starting a business, it's starting a business and maintaining a stable family life. Azriela Jaffe has traveled that difficult route, and by combining her own experiences with those of 130 other couples, she has assembled the definitive guide to achieving success on both fronts. The resultant work, Honey, I Want to Start My Own Business: A Planning Guide for Couples, mixes illuminating real-life examples with practical advice for achieving entrepreneurial fulfillment and personal peace. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

Basing this book on her own experiences of trying and surviving numerous entrepreneurial adventures with her husband, plus interviews with 125 couples, Jaffe has created a cross between an entrepreneurial guide like Michael Gerber's The E-Myth (Ballenger, 1986) and a couple's relationship book like John Gray's Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus (LJ 12/93). Using detailed exercises and quizzes, Jaffe provides readers with insights into choosing a small business, evaluating the risks and personal sacrifices each partner is willing to make, deciding if working at home is a viable option, and keeping lines of communication and love open. Sample scenarios illuminate everything from how to offer constructive criticism to how to bring romance back into harried lives. The conflict resolution chapter especially leads the way through resentment and misunderstanding. Buy this title to help life-mates through the emotionally charged issues of financial risk, business failure, and family sacrifices.?Susan Awe, Jefferson Cty. P.L. System, Arvada, Col.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read book for couples wanting to work together, August 7, 2000
This review is from: Honey, I Want to Start My Own Business: A Planning Guide for Couples (Paperback)
This is a perfect book to read and complete the surveys together with your significant other. I read this book in one sitting and can't wait to get started going through the surveys with my husband and seeing where we differ in our ideas and where we have the same ideas, and spend more time on sitting down and communicating together.

As most of your know with the busy schedules of work, home, kids, etc. it is hard to set time aside for yourself. The author gives you great insight into working on your own relationship also, and also provides follow up books if you want more knowledge about a certain area.

I would highly recommend this book to any couple working together or thinking of working together.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Advice and Information, September 8, 2010

This review originally appeared on the Boardroom Couple blog as reviewed by my husband:

Honey, I Want to Start My Own Business is another good book to read if you are planning to work with your spouse. I felt that the author - Azriela Jaffe geared this book primarily towards couples who are still in the planning phases (as the title even suggests), but those already working together will find some good take aways also.

Overall, the book has a lot of good information, but it's presented in a rather broad fashion and if you are already working with your spouse a lot of the information in this book might not apply to you.

Each chapter is complemented with self assessments, so you can really get involved and work through the issues in your particular situation. But at times working through this book, Julie and I felt like it falls into paralysis by analysis. That is, it has so much information that it's more like a doctorate dissertation rather than a friendly guide. The assessments are all good but obviously most are not going to apply to your situation. For example if you are a `dual entrepreneur' couple, you are not going to find the assessment test for `supportive spouses' very useful. Or, if you are still in the planning phases of the business, you might not be that enthusiastic about reading chapter eight - `This Isn't What I Bargained For'. On the other hand though, being aware of certain pitfalls is beneficial, because you can quickly correct these flaws in your marriage and business relationship if you find yourself moving towards that direction.

All Chapter Titles

Part 1: Creating a Family Plan

Exploring Self-Employment Alternatives: Considering Family Issues
Combining Marriage and Entrepreneurship: Three Models of Joining Together on the Entrepreneurial Journey
Financial and Family Planning: Planning Ahead to Avoid Disaster
The Joys and Challenges of Working at Home: How Working at Home Can Work - and When It Can't

Part 2: Sustaining a Thriving Marriage

Communication Skills: Understanding Your Partner and Getting Your Point Across
Win/Win Conflict Resolution: Resolving Conflict at Work and at Home
Keeping the Romance Alive: Creative Ways to Protect and Nurture the Intimacy of Your Relationship
This Isn't What I Bargained For: Coping with Hard Times and Coming Out Stronger

One chapter I highly recommend in this book is chapter 7 - Keeping the Romance Alive: Creative Ways to Protect and Nurture the Intimacy of Your Relationship. This applies no matter where in you entrepreneurial couple relationship you are in and the author does a great job explaining what is a romantic marriage and then offers great tips on how to develop a romantic marriage. Her list of `Romantic Gifts that Don't Cost Money` is well worth it.

My recommendation for this book would be to first read the full book without doing any of the self assessments, while reading mark the ones of interest to you. Then complete the assessments at the end.
