Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The author of the parenting staple Honey for a Child's Heart expands her role to become a chatty adviser for Christian women interested in exploring the literary world. Hunt's passion for books is infectious as she discourses on a broad range of issues from "Why Read?" to the classics, genre fiction, nonfiction, book groups, poetry, the Bible, making time to read and a host of related topics. As well as listing her choices for best books in each of the categories she discusses, Hunt adds recommendations from outside sources (including editors, housewives, librarians and Mitford maven Jan Karon), which are boxed on the pages. The resulting compilation of titles resembles a list one might obtain from a well-read book group. Hunt also tackles some of the touchier issues for conservative Christian readers, such as the value of reading selected books that contain profanity and sexual situations. There's homespun wisdom ("It's a good rule to never pronounce judgments on books you haven't read"), as well as moral commentary (Hunt calls Snow Falling on Cedars "beautifully written, but with some unnecessary sexual scenes"). Interspersed throughout the text are her effusive accolades such as "My all-time favorite" or "that title is the best!" Hunt's gushy asides are easily pardoned because they're just one part of her unbridled enthusiasm. It's a satisfyingly eclectic mix for book junkies, which doubles as an introduction to reading for the reluctant reader. "The right thing said in the right way, ah, that's the delight of good books," writes Hunt. There's much to delight in here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book!, September 14, 2007

This review is from: Honey for a Woman's Heart: Growing Your World through Reading Great Books (Paperback)
Both myself and my husband have enjoyed this book and "Honey for a Child's Heart". We have not yet read "Honey for a Teen's Heart", but it is on the shelf waiting for us when we are ready, and our daughter is closer to her teen years. The descriptions of the books she recommends are great for deciding if the book is something you might be interested in, yet she and her friends, do not ruin the stories for you. This is a great book, highly recommended for Christian families, but anyone can benefit from the awesome books on her lists. Her encourangement to make reading a wonderful manner in which to connect with those you love, is of great importance more now than ever. Please write, "Honey for a Man's Heart"!! Thankfully, many of the women's book recommendations are suitable for a man as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any Christian Woman who reads!, May 26, 2009

This review is from: Honey for a Woman's Heart: Growing Your World through Reading Great Books (Paperback)
If you are like me and love to read, but have found that at times you pick up a book and then get taken by surprise because you realize the book has content that you realize it isn't wise to set before your eyes and mind, then this is a wonderful book for you to get.

Gladys Hunt first talks about reading itself--why women do read and why it's important for us to read! It was refreshing, convicting, and encouraging to me. My husband is always encouraging me to read more--rather than watch television =)

Then she talks about the different genres of fiction and the authors that are worth reading. Scattered throughout the book, she has lists of books submitted by acquaintances and friends of hers. I think that a lot of Christian women stick to Christian inspirational fiction because it is lighthearted and they feel they can trust what the book is going to be about and that it's going to have a happy ending. But, Gladys Hunt has suggestions for all sorts of books that are worth reading--and I would say even important to read because they help us see outside of ourselves and understand the world better.

I highly recommend this book! The other two books in the series: Honey for a Teen's Heart, and Honey for a Child's Heart are also very worthy of reading. She is not extreme in her views and takes a very balanced protective, but not sheltering view of what children and teens should and should not read.
